Case Details:
Rentu Seikh and Uttam Mondal had a quarrel concerning their goats. Rentu Seikh sought
revenge on Uttam, and, on 2 nd June 2007, Rentu attacked Kush Mondal, Uttam’s seven yearold
son, while he was going to school. Rentu tied his hands and legs with a towel and put a rope
around his neck so as to kill him. However, two teachers were passing by and found Kush lying
in a pool of blood with his nose and mouth still bleeding. Kush was admitted to the hospital.
Uttam lodged a complaint, but the police have failed to take action.

Victim Mala Das was married to Kishori Das, who was acquainted with the ruling party. Kishori
regularly tortured Mala and attempted to force her to engage in prostitution, which she refused to
oblige. Mala’s brother Tapan Das repeatedly asked Kishori not to abuse Mala.
On 8 th August 2007, Kishori tortured and hung Mala to make her death appear as a suicide.
When Tapan Das learned of the death, he went to retrieve her body. He saw black spots all over
her body, which was evidence of her beatings.
Tapan Das went to lodge a complaint against Kishori Das and his mother at Jalangi Police
Station, but his complaint was rejected. Instead Jalangi PS SI Utpal Das foisted a false complaint
and lodged an FIR.
Tapan Das lodged a complaint with the SP of Berhampore and WBHRC, but no action has been
taken.
