Emboldened by the police inaction, the perpetrators started pressuring Jageshwar Rabi Das to
withdraw his complaints against them. They also warned Jageshwar Rabi Das that, if he did not
obey them, they would torture his son.
Jageshwar Rabi Das was frightened and sought assistance from a civil society organization
named “Ultadanga Sochchar.” One of the members of that organisation took Jageshwar Rabi
Das to the police station, but still the police behaved harshly with them.
Lata Das’s physical condition deteriorated, and she was taken to the R. G. Kar Hospital at
Kolkata on 15 June 2007. The report of the CT scan showed that she had a fracture of the orbital
plate of the left ethamoid.

The incident received wide media coverage, which forced the Deputy Commissioner of Police
(North), Kolkata Police, Kolkata to assure the victims of a proper investigation into the matter.

On 18 June 2007, Jageshwar Rabi Das went to the SHRC and prayed for action.

Case Details:
On 12 th October 2007, eight individuals, who were members of the ruling party, attacked victim
Kamal Seikh over a graveyard issue. They beat him with wooden logs. Kamal was admitted
to the hospital, where he died of related injuries.
Some villagers trapped the perpetrators and surrendered them to Beldanga PS. However,
O.C of Beldanga PS Sandip Sen refused to take action against the perpetrators.
Kamal’s brother Samad Ali lodged complaints with the SP of Berhampore, but no action has
been taken.
