unconscious. Alimujjaman was then taken into police custody. The next day, Alimujjaman was<br />

released to the Panchayat head and the Alimujjaman’s brother. The OC threatened Alimujjaman<br />

not to file a complaint, and forced him to sign a document stating that he did not face any kind of<br />

torture.<br />

Case Details:<br />

On 14 October 2007, at 6:30 pm, about 25-27 officers of Chinsurah PS, led by Kartik Upadhyay<br />

and Madhumoy Ghosh, illegally entered the office of the Trinamul Congress Party (one of the<br />

leading opposition parties in <strong>West</strong> <strong>Bengal</strong>). The police slapped, punched and kicked victim<br />

Asish Sen, former Chairman of Hooghly – Chinsurah Municipality and a member of the party.<br />

He was then forcibly taken to Chinsurah PS and the police continued their beatings there.<br />

The police officers’ violent treatment of Sen was in response to Sen’s attempt to rescue another<br />

man who the police had been beating in front of the party office. .<br />

Sen attempted to lodge a complaint with the Chinsurah PS. In response, the police officers again<br />

attacked him and forcibly pushed him out of the police station. The Deputy Police Superintendent<br />

and the Inspector-in-Charge of Chinsurah PS witnessed the police officers’ abusive actions<br />

against Sen.<br />

Sen was ultimately able to lodge a complaint with the Chinsurah PS. Since then, the police<br />

officers who attacked him have made numerous death threats towards him. Sen also lodged a<br />

complaint with the Superintendent of Police of Hooghly District on 15 October 2007, but the police<br />

have taken no follow-up action.
