On 8 July 2007, 3-4 Dhubulia PS police officers arrested Adhikary and some other sex workers. There were no female arresting police officers and there were no female police officers at the Dhubulia PS. The male Dhubulia PS police officers forced the women to change their clothes in front of them. On 9 July 2007, Dhubulia PS Officer-in-Charge Biman Mridha beat the women with a baton. The women were also detained for two days and the police registered a case against them. Adhikary and the other women sent complaints to several higher police officials but no follow-up action was taken. They come from very poor families and their families were fully dependent on their income. On 8 th July 2007 at around 10.30pm the victims went to a ‘Dhaba’ near Bahadurpur railway crossing. On that time 3-4 policemen at plain clothes came to that place and took them to Dhubulia PS. There was no woman police at the time of arrest and also no woman police was at the PS.
On duty police personnel kept them at separate room and compelled them to change their clothes in front of male policemen. Those victims were not provided any food at night at the police station. Next day on 9 th July 2007 Mr. Biman Mridha, the Officer in Charge of Dhubulia PS, and Ms. Sabita, female police of the PS beat them mercilessly by baton. After illegal detaining them for two days, the police registered a case against them and they were produced before Krishnanagar Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on 10 th July 2007 under section ITPA. Each of them managed bail by spending Rupees 1500/-. The victims were so scared that they did not gather courage to visit doctor for treatment after getting bail from court. Fact finding team collected a snap of Sathi Mondal, one of the victims clearly showed her wounds. The victims sent written complaint to the secretary of ‘Durbar Mahila Samannay Committee’ (a women rights organization). The organization sent written complaints to several higher police officials but no action was taken against the perpetrators. Point Camp, BSF; Raninagar PS Date of incident : 28/01/2007 Case Details: Victim Chanubala Mondal, age about 50, is a farmer. She resides in Basnabad village, Murshidabad District. On 28 January 2007 at 8.30am, Chanubala Mondal was returning home from her farmland after engaging a few labourers in sowing seeds. While she was crossing the 3 Number O.P. Point Camp of the BSF, an officer on duty there asked her if she was returning after smuggling goods. Even before Chanubala Mondal could explain that she was returning from her farmland, the officer started beating her with sticks. He insulted her and used obscenities. Chanubala Mondal was injured all over her body. She fell to the ground. Chanubala Mondal was helpless and immobile, and could not take immediate medical treatment. The victim was later treated for her injuries by a local quack, Tapan Dutta. Later, Chanubala Mondal went to lodge a complaint at the Raninagar PS.
