On 17 July 2006, Alekjan Bewa again made a written complaint to the Basanti PS, but no action<br />

was taken. On 27 October 206, she lodged a written petition to the SP of 24 Parganas (South)<br />

district, but still, no action was taken.<br />

On 2 November 206, Alekjan Bewa filed a case with the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Alipore,<br />

Kolkata (under Section 498A/302/201of Indian Penal Code). The court ordered the Basanti PS<br />

to treat this complaint as a FIR and investigate the matter. Despite the court order, the Officer-in-<br />

Charge (OC) of the Basanti PS has not yet investigated this case.<br />

Case Details:<br />

On 14 November 2006, victim Rimpi Dey committed suicide due to the dowry-related torture<br />

meted out to her by her in-laws. Before the suicide, Rimpi wrote a suicide note blaming her<br />

husband and her in-laws.<br />

When Rimpi Dey’s father Narayan Dey went to lodge a complaint at the Ghola PS with his<br />

relatives and neighbours, Duty Officer Biswajit Mondal refused to take the complaint. The Duty<br />

Officer contacted Rimpi Dey’s widower by telephone; when Narayan Dey protested, the Duty<br />

Officer abused him physically.<br />

Narayan Dey informed the media about the incident and this coverage later helped him lodge a<br />

complaint.<br />

Eventually, another officer at the Ghola PS took his complaint, but did not give him a copy of the<br />

FIR.<br />

On 22 November 2006, an FIR was filed u/s 498A/304B/34 IPC and under the Dowry Prohibition<br />

Act. The written complaint of Narayan Dey dated 15/11/06 to the Ghola PS was treated as an<br />

FIR.
