Ramesh even though he was not wanted in connection with any police case. Though the police<br />

had registered three cases against certain individuals for wrongful acts in connection with the<br />

demonstration, Ramesh was not named in any of the complaints.<br />

On 23 August 2007, Ramesh’s brother, Mr. Ganesh Koley lodged complaints with SP<br />

Hooghly and the District Magistrate requesting that action be taken against the police<br />

officers who had fired the tear gas and seeking compensation for t Ramesh’s injuries.<br />

However, no action was taken against the officers. Ramesh’s family has spent more<br />

than Rs.30000/- for his treatment, and will likely incur additional medical costs.<br />

Case Details:<br />

Victim Mahabul Seikh is 13 years old; victim Pintu Malia is 14 years old.<br />

On 30 March 2007 at around 2.00am, Mahabul Seikh and Pintu Malia were bicycling around<br />

the field of Hukahara Bhutgari. ASI Somnath Singha and other officers on patrol stopped them.<br />

The ASI, knowing that some stationery items had been stolen from Humayun Kabir’s shop,<br />

arrested Mahabul Seikh and Pintu Malia and took them to the Jalangi PS lock-up. Mahabul<br />

Seikh and Pintu Malia’s families were not informed.<br />

On 31 March 2007 in the morning, Humayun Kabir came to the Jalangi PS to lodge a complaint<br />

about the incident, but OC Somnath Banerjee refused to record it.<br />

On 1 April 2007 at 7.00am, Mahabul Seikh and Pintu Malia’s family members learned from<br />

some neighbours about Mahabul Seikh and Pintu Malia’s arrest – and that the ASI had reportedly<br />

beaten them in the lock-up.<br />

On 2 April 2007 at 9.00am, Mahabul Seikh and Pintu Malia were produced before the Court.
