Malik and the others suffered huge financial losses.<br />

It was later revealed that the police of Jangipara PS falsely implicated the victim in a case u/s<br />

399/402 IPC (Case No. 61/2007).<br />

Sukumar Malik is still in police custody, having been denied bail by the court. He was only wage<br />

earner in his family; his detention has left his family members helpless and now they are<br />

undergoing a severe financial crisis.<br />

Case Details:<br />

Victim Md. Sayab Ali Mondal is a daily wage earner, who manages to feed his family by working<br />

on a small piece of land.<br />

On 10 November 2006, while he was approaching his land with his two sons, Md. Sayab Ali<br />

Mondal saw some BSF personnel unloading smuggled goods from a vehicle clearly from<br />

Bangladesh.<br />

Frightened by the presence of a civilian, the BSF personnel became furious. They began to<br />

beat Md. Sayab Ali Mondal severely with bamboo sticks. Even when Md. Sayab Ali Mondal<br />

was knocked to the ground, they did not stop. Md. Sayab Ali Mondal received grave injuries to<br />

his left wrist, and fell unconscious.<br />

When Md. Sayab Ali Mondal regained consciousness, he visited nearby Sagarpara Hospital.<br />

The Hospital authority provided some primary medical treatment and referred him for an x-ray<br />

of his wrist. The x-ray report showed that Md. Sayab Ali Mondal’s wrist had sustained multiple<br />

fractures.<br />

Local human rights activist Gopen Sharma assisted Md. Sayab Ali Mondal in drafting a complaint.<br />
