but the police only harassed them and refused to file the complaint. Finally, on 4 th April 2007, the<br />

Case Details:<br />
On 1 May 2007, victim Ruksana Sardar, a CPI(M) activist, was returning from the market with<br />
her son victim Warish Sardar. They saw a drunken local boy named Tuma behaving irregularly,<br />
and they saw a local man named Idrish approach and beat Tuma. One Sajid Mia protested, so<br />
Idrish beat him as well. Warish Sardar tried to free Tuma from Idrish. When Tuma’s father<br />
arrived, Warish Sardar told him what had happened; Tuma’s father took him home.<br />
On 2 May 2007, Tuma and his friends Pradip and Amarnath took Warish Sardar forcibly to the<br />
Bandhab Samity Club, where some CPI(M) members were already present. Together, they<br />
beat Warish Sardar.<br />
On learning of the beating, Ruksana Sardar rushed to the place, but the people there started to<br />
beat her too. Ashok Ghosh, a local CPI(M) leader, threatened Ruksana and Warish Sardar.<br />
After this incident, as they were returning home, Ruksana and Warish Sardar were again beaten<br />
by one Asim Saha.<br />

2007<br />
Some local people and CPI(M) members took Ruksana and Warish Sardar to the Bangur<br />
Hospital, and informed Ruksana Sardar’s husband Sujit Sardar.<br />
On 3 May 2007, Sujit Sardar went to the Patuli PS and lodged a complaint.<br />
On 4 May 2007, Ruksana Sardar was discharged from the Hospital. She went to the Patuli PS<br />
with a witness named Bhagirath to lodge a complaint against the CPI(M) members. OC Piyal<br />
Bhattacharya refused to register the complaint and told Ruksana Sardar that she would not
