At 11.20pm, the officers returned to Kartik Chandra Haldar’s house, pushed open the door,<br />
insulted him, and ordered him to come out. They forced Kartik Chandra Haldar to sign a blank<br />
paper and demanded that he leave the building by 23 November 2007. Kartik Chandra Haldar<br />
treid to show them his court papers, but they refused to look at the papers and insulted him again.<br />
Kartik Chandra Haldar went to the Balagar PS to lodge complaint, but the OC was absent so he<br />
could do nothing. Kartik Chandra Haldar made several visits to the station to lodge a complaint,<br />
but the OC refused to meet him every time.<br />
Kartik Chandra Haldar sent a complaint to the Superintendent of Police, Chinsurah, Hooghly,<br />
against those who had mistreated him.<br />
OC Partha Sarathi Paul told the fact-finding team that he would protect Kartik Chandra Haldar.<br />

Case Details:<br />
On 12 September 2007, victim Krishna Mondal, age 55, and victim Kalpana Baul Das, age 60,<br />
participated in a peaceful protest regarding the reopening of a health center in Itachuna, Pandua,<br />
Hooghly.<br />
At 12:00pm, 100 police officers from the Pandua Police conducted a lathi charge against the<br />
protestors. A make police officer struck Mondal on the head with a wooden roller, knocking her<br />
to the ground and causing severe head injury. The police officer continued to beat Mondal while<br />
she was on the ground and repeatedly kicked Mondal in the stomach.<br />
A male police officer also assaulted Das. The police officer pulled Das by her hair to his police<br />
car, ripping out a chunk of her hair and causing Das severe pain. The police detained Das in the<br />
police station for five hours and was not provided with food or water. Since this incident, Das has<br />
been rendered bedridden.<br />
