On 27 February 2007 at around 2:00pm, a man and his wife came to the house of victim Pradip
Paswan to collect Rs. 40 that Pradip had borrowed from them. Pradip told the couple that he
could not repay them immediately. Shah’s wife abused Paswan’s son and called some locals
to witness the incident. Mahesh Shaw and his wife then beat Paswan. Jagardal PS police
officers joined in the beating until Paswan fell unconscious. Paswan was hospitalized.
The police arrested Paswan without a warrant. The police slapped and insulted Paswan’s
father when he asked why Paswan had been arrested.
Officer Anil Biswas demanded Rs. 250 from Paswan’s father in order to release Paswan.
Paswan’s family could not afford to pay the bribe.
On 28 February 2007 police officer Anil Das hid Paswan’s original injury report, replacing it with
a falsified version.

On 26 October 2006, some local CPI(M) party members, including Kishu Bhaduri and Rana
Ganguly, attacked the victims. Prasenjit sustained injuries to his lips and elsewhere; Sarmitha’s
