On 27 February 2007 at around 2:00pm, a man and his wife came to the house of victim Pradip<br />
Paswan to collect Rs. 40 that Pradip had borrowed from them. Pradip told the couple that he<br />
could not repay them immediately. Shah’s wife abused Paswan’s son and called some locals<br />
to witness the incident. Mahesh Shaw and his wife then beat Paswan. Jagardal PS police<br />
officers joined in the beating until Paswan fell unconscious. Paswan was hospitalized.<br />
The police arrested Paswan without a warrant. The police slapped and insulted Paswan’s<br />
father when he asked why Paswan had been arrested.<br />
Officer Anil Biswas demanded Rs. 250 from Paswan’s father in order to release Paswan.<br />
Paswan’s family could not afford to pay the bribe.<br />
On 28 February 2007 police officer Anil Das hid Paswan’s original injury report, replacing it with<br />
a falsified version.<br />
