On 9 February 2007, Deepa Roy went for tuition but did not return home that the normal hour.<br />

She was not found until 10.00pm.<br />

Deepa Roy was examined by a local doctor, who identified that she had been raped and referred<br />

her to the J.R. Dhal Hospital (Bongaon General Hospital).<br />

Gopal Roy informed Deepa Roy’s uncle Harekrishna Roy that Deepa Roy had met with a<br />

bicycle accident. Harekrishna Roy rushed with another of Deepa Roy’s uncles, Patirosh<br />

Haldar, to the hospital, where they found that Deepa Roy had serious injuries caused by rape.<br />

Gopal Roy was present at the time.<br />

At 11.30pm, police officers from Gaighata PS arrested Gopal Roy at the Hospital in front of his<br />

father. They did not produce any warrant.<br />

Harekrishna Roy and Patirosh Haldar had Deepa Roy rushed to Kolkata R.G. Kar Hospital for<br />

better treatment. There, the doctors demanded the case number and said that they could not<br />

proceed with the treatment without a complaint, as this was a rape case. Therefore, Harekrishna<br />

Roy lodged complaint at the Gaighata PS against Gopal Roy on 10 February 2007 u/s 376 IPC.<br />

ASI R. Biswas was appointed as the Investigating Officer.<br />

On 12 February 2007, Gopal Roy was produced before the court. OC Jogindranath Dutta of<br />

Gaighata PS had fabricated documents to show that Gopal Roy had been arrested at the<br />

Chandan Market on 11 February 2007. The police strongly opposed granting bail to Gopal Roy.<br />

On 2 May 2007, Japai Naskar was murdered in Begumpur village. When the police investigated<br />

the murder, they came to the village several times and pressured the locals to disclose the<br />

names of local miscreants. Because of Gour Haldar’s business, the police assumed that he<br />

might know something. They proceeded to ransack Gour Haldar’s uncle’s house.<br />
