On 2 July 2007, a case of unnatural death was registered at Dadpur Police Station dated 2 nd July<br />
2007 under section 302/201 of Indian Penal Code. However, the police have not arrested any<br />
one, and have not reviewed the post mortem report.<br />

Victim Sovarani Paik is a resident of Piyali Village. On 8 April 2007, Paik chased her neighbor’s<br />
cow from her land because the cow had been eating her crops. Paik’s neighbor and his family<br />
subsequently attacked Paik with an iron rod. Paik fell to the ground, and her attackers continued<br />
to punch and kick her. They also attacked Paik’s daughter.<br />
At 8.00pm, Paik attempted to file a complaint against her neighbor at Ghutiari Sarif Out Post. The<br />
official refused to file the complaint and verbally abused Paik. After several requests, the outpost<br />
finally recorded a General Diary Entry, but they did not take any subsequent action. Paik’s<br />
neighbor has told her that the police would not take action against him.<br />

Victim Sujata Nath, age 22, lived in Sthir Para village, North 24 Parganas District.<br />
On 12 June 2006 at 8.00am, Nath’s husband attempted to burn Nath to death. Nath’s brother<br />
took Nath to the hospital. Nath died at 12:00pm.<br />
The only action the police have taken is to request that Nath’s brother lock the door where the<br />
burning occurred.<br />
