On 15 June 2007, at about 4:00pm, Ghosh was working in the “New Casualty Block” of the
hospital. Pranay Sarkar, a police officer, was on duty at the hospital and was also the brother
of a recently admitted patient in the block.
Officer Sarkar became very angry that his brother was not receiving immediate attention from
the doctor. Officer Sarkar began using abusive language, to which Ghosh protested. In
response, Officer Sarkar attacked Ghosh and knocked her from a chair onto the ground.
Officer Sarkar then grabbed Ghosh by her hair and continuously punched her on her chest.
Ghosh was seriously injured and was hospitalized.
The hospital authority lodged a case against Officer Sarkar. He has posted bail.

Case Details:
Victim Santosh Mondal, age 40, lived in the village of Shibpur in Murshidabad District. Mondal
was a member of a scheduled caste.
On 27 July 2007, at about 6.00pm, Mondal was sitting along the bank of the River Padma with
some friends. Three Border Security Force (BSF) Officers approached Mondal and his
friends and interrogated them. The BSF Officers then began beating Mondal and his friends
with batons. Mondal’s friends ran away. Mondal tried to escape by jumping into the river. The
BSF Officers attempted to catch Mondal in their speedboat.
The BSF Officers ran Mondal over with the speedboat. The collision created a heavy sound
and caused the boat’s propeller broke,
Mondal never came home nor was his body found.
