On 6 February 2007 at 5.00pm, Banashree Malik was playing on the roadside with her friends.<br />
At the same time, a band of armed police personnel was marching on the road and threatening<br />
the villagers. Banashree Malik, like others, tried to escape and to return home.<br />
One of the officers identified Banashree Malik as the daughter of Pasupati Malik. He hit her with<br />
a lathi on her waist. Banashree Malik cried in pain.<br />
Banashree Malik was admitted to the Singur Rural Hospital.<br />
On 7 February 2007, Banashree Malik was discharged from the Hospital, having been advised<br />
to have an x-ray of her pelvic region.<br />
Pasupati Malik and other members of Banashree Malik’s family were so scared that they did not<br />
dare to lodge a complaint against the officer.<br />

Case Detail:<br />
Victim Samsul Sekh is a farmer and resides in Ramnagar Babupara village. He had several<br />
copies of a certificate, for which he paid Rs. 8,000, permitting him to cultivate the land on a<br />
particular island in the Padma River. When BSF personnel enquired about Samsul Seikh’s<br />
cultivation, he handed them his certificate, which was registered as BSF Entry No. 431.<br />
On 25 May 2007, Assistant Commandant Nitish Pramanik noticed one record in which it was<br />
written that Samsul Seikh went to his land but did not return, and that Samsul Seikh had refused<br />
to pay Rs. 8,000 as per BSF records. The Assistant Commandant and four BSF offiers arrested<br />
Samsul Seikh, and beat him in detention after seizing the copies of his certificate and his original<br />
Voter Identity Card.<br />
Samsul Seikh complained to victim Belu Rani, the Prodhan [head of elected body] of Katlamari<br />
II Gram Panchayat.<br />
On 26 May 2007, Assistant Commandant Nitish Pramanik called Belu Rani to meet him.<br />
At 8.00am, Belu Rani went with two colleagues, victims Praneet Kumar Pramanik and Mohammad<br />
Molla to the Assistant Commandant’s office.
