Teaching Divisions<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> has two teaching divisions under the control <strong>of</strong><br />

one Council. They are:<br />

Higher Education Division<br />

This division <strong>of</strong>fers pr<strong>of</strong>essional qualifications (diplomas and<br />

$ degrees <strong>of</strong> Bachelor) and graduate qualifications (certificates,<br />

6- diplomas and degrees <strong>of</strong> Master and PhD). Enrolments in<br />

1993 were 4958 full-time and 3873 part-time students.<br />

Technical and Further Education Division (TAFE)<br />

This division <strong>of</strong>fers courses at pr<strong>of</strong>essional and parapr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

level, covering associate diploma, advanced<br />

certificate, apprenticeship, VCE and access programs. A<br />

number <strong>of</strong> specialist courses are also provided for industry<br />

and the community. Enrolments in 1992 were 4093 full-time<br />

and 7319 (not including short courses) part-time students.<br />

Hawthorn Campus<br />

Hawthorn is <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s original campus. It <strong>of</strong>fers a broad<br />

range <strong>of</strong> undergraduate higher education and TAFE courses<br />

in Applied Science, Art and Design, Arts, Business and<br />

Engineering. All <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s postgraduate programs are<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered on this campus.<br />

Hawthorn campus is one <strong>of</strong> the few in Australia that <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

well integrated Higher Education and TAFE sectors on the<br />

one campus. This is illustrated by the innovative Pathway;<br />

Program that is implementing detailed articulation and credit<br />

transfer programs between TAFE and Higher Education.<br />

It is also the site for many <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s research and<br />

training centres.<br />

Students enjoy a full range <strong>of</strong> services and facilities including<br />

a library, bookshop, sports centre, cafeterias, health centre,<br />

childcare, counselling and careers advice.<br />

The Hawthorn campus is located seven kilometres from the<br />

city, and is easily accessible by train and tram. Limited areas<br />

have been set aside for student parking. The campus is also<br />

close to the Glenferrie Road shopping centre which <strong>of</strong>fers a<br />

wide variety <strong>of</strong> goods and services.<br />

Mooroolbark Campus<br />

Students at the Mooroolbark campus enjoy an attractive<br />

intimate atmosphere in a natiw setting, boasting a small<br />

lake, sporting facilities and all the amenities <strong>of</strong> a modern<br />

tertiary institution. This new campus increases educational<br />

options in the outer eastern suburbs.<br />

Situated on the site <strong>of</strong> the former MDA Grammar School in<br />

Edinburgh Rd, Lilydale, the campus provides courses in the<br />

Business, Applied Science, Arts and Engineering Faculties.<br />

The courses <strong>of</strong>fered in the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business are in<br />

Accounting, Marketing and Economics<br />

and the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Applied Science course in<br />

Mathematicdcomputer Science is also <strong>of</strong>fered, with students<br />

undertaking the same programs as students at the<br />

Hawthorn Campus. The majors <strong>of</strong>fered in the Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />

Arts are Psychology, Media Studies, Sociology, Philosophy<br />

and Cultural Studies, Economics (taught by Business Faculty),<br />

Literature, and Political Studies where students numbers<br />

permit. A distinctive aspect <strong>of</strong> the Mooroolbark Campus<br />

degrees in Business and Arts is that there is the opportunity<br />

to cross faculty boundaries which allows the construction <strong>of</strong><br />

tailored programs which combine aspects <strong>of</strong> Business and<br />

Arts. Students wishing to study a language (Japanese, Italian,<br />

Korean, Vietnamese) currently must secure a place on the<br />

Hawthorn Campus.<br />

The Engineering Faculty <strong>of</strong>fers the common first year <strong>of</strong> its<br />

degree courses in Electrical (Power. Communications and<br />

Computer Systems), Civil, Manufacturing and Mechanical<br />

Engineering. Postgraduate programs in Computer Systems<br />

Engineering and Information <strong>Technology</strong> are also <strong>of</strong>fered.<br />

The degrees <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Engineering and Doctor <strong>of</strong><br />

Philosophy are also available. This establishes a complete and<br />

fully accredited tertiary environment by having in place<br />

programs ranging from first year undergraduate to Masters<br />

and PhD studies.<br />

Prahran Campus<br />

Prahran campus (formerly Prahran College <strong>of</strong> TAFE) joined<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> in 1992. The roots <strong>of</strong> this campus are deeply<br />

entrenched in the history <strong>of</strong> the local area. This small and<br />

friendly campus with its mixture <strong>of</strong> modern and historical<br />

buildings, is easily accessible by train, tram and bus and is<br />

situated in the heart <strong>of</strong> cosmopolitan Prahran.<br />

Through its Schools <strong>of</strong> Business Studies. Social Sciences and<br />

Arts and its Centre for Furniture Studies, the campus <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

Associate Diploma, Advanced Certificate and Certificate<br />

courses via full-time or part-time enrolment. External study<br />

options are also available through the Off-campus<br />

Department.<br />

Courses include: accounting, credit management, credit<br />

procedures and practices, computer programming, insurance,<br />

information technology, real estate, records management,<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice and secretarial studies, management, library and<br />

information studies, child care studies, residential and<br />

community services, Koori child care, theatre technology and<br />

small companies, graphic art, art and design - film and<br />

video production, applied language, E.S.L., literacy, furniture<br />

studies for indentured apprentices, year eleven and year<br />

twelve VCE.<br />

Owr 600 fee-for-service short courses are also <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

embracing the entertainment industry, hobby, skill<br />

enhancement, language and business and computing.<br />

Full-time Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts courses in Graphic and Industrial<br />

Design are also <strong>of</strong>fered through the School <strong>of</strong> Design.
