Summer School in that subject. On the<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> the Summer School, "55"<br />

grades will be changed to "SP" if a pass is<br />

granted for that subject and to "SN" if the<br />

result is a fail.<br />

If, at the end <strong>of</strong> the Summer School System<br />

the student has a failing grade, the student<br />

will be required to repeat that subject.<br />

A student will normally be permitted to<br />

undertake Summer School in a maximum <strong>of</strong><br />

three subjects.<br />

The Summer School assessment will not, for<br />

the purposes <strong>of</strong> exclusion, be regarded as a<br />

complete (i.e. second) attempt at a subject,<br />

howwer, individual students will be granted<br />

the opportunity to undertake Summer School<br />

on one occasion only.<br />

5 Result categories and percentage scores<br />

The relationship between result categories and<br />

normalised percentage scores is:<br />

H D 85% - 100%<br />

D 75 - 84<br />

C 65 - 74<br />

P 50 - 64<br />

N 0 - 49<br />

It should be <strong>note</strong>d that the above table is used in<br />

determining result categories for all students enrolled in a<br />

subject irrespective <strong>of</strong> whether the students are eligible<br />

for a Faculty Pass or not.<br />

Additional grades, for which percentage scores are not<br />

applicable, may be awarded as a result <strong>of</strong> application <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Faculty Passing Scheme. These are:<br />

FP Faculty Pass<br />

SP Pass at supplementary assessment<br />

SN Fail at supplementary assessment<br />

SUP Supplementary assessment granted for this subject<br />

Guidelines for part-time study<br />

With changes in the courses <strong>of</strong> study leading to degree<br />

qualifications, some part-time students may be unsure <strong>of</strong> the<br />

subjects they are required to pass in order to qualify for an<br />

award.<br />

The following guidelines which the Engineering Faculty<br />

Board has established should be used to determine the<br />

subject requirements for students undertaking courses<br />

(including conversion programs) on a part-time basis:<br />

(a) In general, students who haw not at some time<br />

discontinued their course without permission, will follow<br />

the course <strong>of</strong> study in operation at the time <strong>of</strong> their<br />

initial enrolment in the Higher Education Division <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong> and as specified in the engineering section <strong>of</strong><br />

the Handbook for that year.<br />

(b) Despite the above, students who are undertaking a<br />

course <strong>of</strong> study which has been unduly prolonged, or<br />

who would benefit from transfer to a later course <strong>of</strong><br />

study, may be transferred by the Engineering Faculty<br />

Board on the advice <strong>of</strong> the associate dean <strong>of</strong> the<br />

student's school.<br />

(c) Students who discontinue study without permission and<br />

who later wish to renew their enrolment in the Higher<br />

Education Division <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> in that same course<br />

will be treated as new students but will receive such<br />

credit for the subjects previously passed as is determined<br />

by the Engineering Faculty Board on the advice <strong>of</strong> the<br />

associate dean <strong>of</strong> the student's school.<br />

(d) Where subjects have been discontinued since students'<br />

initial enrolment, students will be required to undertake<br />

the presently operating subject equivalent subjects. Information<br />

regarding superseded subject equivalents is available<br />

from the associate dean <strong>of</strong> the student's school.<br />

(e) As students will realise, there is <strong>of</strong>ten benefit in transferring<br />

from the course <strong>of</strong> study in operation at the time<br />

<strong>of</strong> enrolment to a later course <strong>of</strong> study. With the<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> the associate dean <strong>of</strong> the student's<br />

school, students may transfer from the course <strong>of</strong> study<br />

for which they are enrolled to a later course <strong>of</strong> study<br />

but should recognise that such a transfer may involve<br />

the undertaking <strong>of</strong> some additional subjects.<br />

Minimum hours for part-time<br />

enrolment<br />

The normal load for part-time students is approximately half<br />

that <strong>of</strong> full-time students, and is typically between 10 and<br />

12 hours <strong>of</strong> class contact per week.<br />

To enable the Faculty to admit as many students as possible<br />

within its quota limits, a minimum time commitment by<br />

part-time students is necessary. This minimum commitment<br />

has been set at seven hours per week, unless special<br />

circumstances apply. Such special circumstances include nonavailability<br />

<strong>of</strong> suitable classes, quota limitations, graduate<br />

studies, or cases where the proposed enrolment arrangements<br />

lead into a standard full-time program. In such special<br />

circumstances, the enrolment requires the specific approval<br />

<strong>of</strong> the head <strong>of</strong> the awarding school.<br />

Part-time students who initially enrol for seven hours per<br />

week or more, and who subsequently withdraw From certain<br />

subjects which reduces their enrolment to below seven hours<br />

per week, may be processed as a total withdrawal from the<br />

course.<br />

Normally the maximum hours <strong>of</strong> class contact for a part-time<br />

undergraduate student are fourteen hours per week,<br />

although special permission may be granted by the associate<br />

dean to study up to sixteen hours per week, particularly if<br />

the increase in hours will allow the student to study on a<br />

full-time basis in the following year.<br />

Exclusion from courses<br />

A student will be considered for exclusion from further study<br />

in the course in which that student is enrolled if he or she:<br />

(i) fails any subject twice<br />

or<br />

(ii) fails more than half <strong>of</strong> the subject hours in which he or<br />

she is enrolled in any academic year.<br />

Normally a third attempt at any subject will not be<br />

permitted.<br />

A student may repeat full-time studies on a full-time basis<br />

once only during a course, unless special approval is given by<br />

the Engineering Faculty Board.<br />

If an associate dean (school) considers that a prima facie<br />

case for exclusion exists, the matter will be referred to the<br />

Engineering Courses Committee sitting as an Exclusions<br />

Su b-Committee.<br />

The procedure for considering engineering students recorn.<br />

mended for exclusion is as follows:<br />

1 Based on compliance with the faculty regulations on<br />

suspension from courses, the associate dean submits a<br />

case for the possible exclusion <strong>of</strong> a student to the<br />

Engineering Courses Committee.<br />
