ADI 08 Issues in Multicultural Australia<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Explores the social impact <strong>of</strong> Australia's ethnically diverse<br />

population and explores the effects <strong>of</strong> cultural and linguistic<br />

differences on individuals' life chances. The subject will also<br />

cover the practical issues <strong>of</strong> dealing with members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

public andlor the workplace who may come from different<br />

cultural backgrounds.<br />

semesters<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Students choosing to study a language other than English as<br />

an elective must undertake hnro semesters <strong>of</strong> study. The<br />

course <strong>of</strong> study assumes no prior knowledge <strong>of</strong> the<br />

language chosen. Both written and spoken language skills<br />

will be developed. The cultural dimensions <strong>of</strong> the language<br />

and its social context will be studied, especially in relation to<br />

its relevance in the workplace.<br />

ADI I I <strong>Technology</strong> and Society<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Investigates the key concept <strong>of</strong> change in society with<br />

particular reference to explaining how and in what ways<br />

societies generate new technologies and adapt to their<br />

impact. Case study examples will be used to focus the study<br />

<strong>of</strong> technology.<br />

ADI I2<br />

Understanding the Mass Media<br />

Subject aims and dexription<br />

Examines the roles and functions <strong>of</strong> the major forms <strong>of</strong><br />

mass media in Australian society. Particular emphasis is given<br />

to such factors as ownership and control <strong>of</strong> the media,<br />

mechanisms for media regulation and debates about the<br />

influence <strong>of</strong> mass media on individuals and social patterns.<br />

ADZOO Behaviour in Organisations<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours<br />

Subject aims and dexription<br />

Examines the theories <strong>of</strong> organisational behaviour. Considers<br />

the ways in which groups and individuals interact with each<br />

other and impact <strong>of</strong> organisational structures on the<br />

functioning <strong>of</strong> organisations. Particular emphasis is given to<br />

the analysis <strong>of</strong> organisational culture and how such<br />

phenomena affect behaviour in the workplace.<br />

AD201 Culture and Ideas<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Examines theories <strong>of</strong> culture and the notions <strong>of</strong> cultural<br />

transmission, continuity and discontinuity and change in<br />

society. Includes case studies <strong>of</strong> cultural contexts, meaning<br />

systems, representations in film and text and the social<br />

sources and impact <strong>of</strong> cultural symbolism. The role <strong>of</strong> ideas<br />

and systems <strong>of</strong> meaning in Australian society is highlighted.<br />

AD202 Data Usage and Interpretation<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

This subject helps the student understand a range <strong>of</strong> forms<br />

<strong>of</strong> data and ways <strong>of</strong> organising both qualitative and<br />

quantitative data. It helps students comprehend basic<br />

methods <strong>of</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong> these data as well as how to interpret<br />

data for particular purposes in a variety <strong>of</strong> employment<br />

contexts.<br />

AD203 Economic Decision-making in the<br />

Enterprise<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Develops an understanding <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> the enterprise in a<br />

modified market economy. The emphasis is on concepts<br />

relevant to microeconomics but the importance <strong>of</strong> the<br />

macroeconomic context in which decisions are made will be<br />

stressed. The student should develop skills <strong>of</strong> analysis and<br />

synthesis based on an understanding <strong>of</strong> economic concepts.<br />

The aim will be to ensure that there is an appreciation <strong>of</strong><br />

the complexity and the interrelationship between economic<br />

factors and their importance in making economic decisions<br />

within business organisations.<br />

AD204 Equity and Opportunity in Australian<br />

Society<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Examines the ideas which underpin concepts <strong>of</strong> equity and<br />

opportunity and explores how these ideas and concepts are<br />

made evident in Australian society, in organisational<br />

structures and in related contexts. Evaluation <strong>of</strong> these<br />

concepts and the critical analysis <strong>of</strong> their applicability in<br />

particular work structures is investigated.<br />

AD205 Health and Illness<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Examines the area <strong>of</strong> occupational health and safety both in<br />

its social and legislative contexts and in its organisational<br />

context. Investigates the impact <strong>of</strong> illness in the workplace<br />

and the broad legal and social issues <strong>of</strong> health and illness in<br />

the society and the workplace, e.g., prevention,<br />

rehabilitation, improved work practices, retraining, access to<br />

medical care.<br />

AD206 Industrial Relations<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Investigates the forces for cooperation and conflict as they<br />

impact on the industrial relations arena in complex<br />

technological societies. Explores the roles and boundaries <strong>of</strong><br />

government involvement and the legal dimensions <strong>of</strong><br />

industrial relations as they affect the roles <strong>of</strong> employers and<br />

unions in a changing environment. Case studies <strong>of</strong> the<br />

interaction between these <strong>of</strong>ten competing groups are<br />

examined.<br />

AD207 Information Systems, Society and<br />

<strong>Technology</strong><br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Explores the theoretical perspectives which influence<br />

understanding about the ev6lution <strong>of</strong> information<br />

technoloav and its dace in different economic contexts.<br />

lnvestigaGs the design and use <strong>of</strong> information systems and<br />

develops the skills <strong>of</strong> needs analysis to arrive at decisions<br />

governing the selection and implementation <strong>of</strong> appropriate<br />

technological solutions adapted to the needs <strong>of</strong> the<br />

workplace.
