Employers <strong>of</strong> students benefit by obtaining a reliable and<br />
continuing source <strong>of</strong> personnel and by establishing a direct<br />
liaison with <strong>Swinburne</strong>. Contact with students assists<br />
employers in choosing the best graduates and reducing the<br />
cost <strong>of</strong> recruiting and training new pr<strong>of</strong>essional staff.<br />
The students are visited regularly by academic staff during<br />
their industrial semesters. Some students have the opportunity<br />
to obtain work experience overseas. In such cases,<br />
academic staff from local educational institutions visit the<br />
students at their places <strong>of</strong> work. Programs <strong>of</strong> exchange with<br />
the following institutions have been <strong>of</strong> particular value to<br />

Students without permanent resident status should be<br />
aware that industry based learning is not available for<br />
certain courses. In the other courses, it is subject to the<br />

availability <strong>of</strong> industrial places and the achievement <strong>of</strong> a<br />
suitable level <strong>of</strong> English language skills by the student.<br />

placement, it is frequently impossible to find local<br />

employment for students without permanent resident status<br />
because priority is given to Australian citizens and<br />
permanent residents.<br />
Students without permanent resident status are advised to<br />
seek placement in their home country. The Faculty will<br />
provide information on academic institutions capable <strong>of</strong><br />
providing supervision <strong>of</strong> industrial placement in the home<br />
country.<br />
Prizes and Scholarships<br />
Eric Bode Prize<br />
A bronze plaque and a cash prize donated by Dr E.H. Bode,<br />
are awarded by the Applied Science Faculty Board to the<br />
best student in the final year <strong>of</strong> the degree courses in<br />
applied science.<br />
Miles Hancock Prize<br />
Awarded in the area <strong>of</strong> postgraduate colloid science.<br />
Awarded on an occasional basis by the Colloid Department<br />
to an outstanding student. The value <strong>of</strong> the prize is<br />
between $500-$1,000.<br />
Mooroolbark campus<br />
Eight first year scholarships will be awarded to Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />
Amlied Science Mathematics and ComDuter Science<br />
siubents in 1994.<br />
T.G.O. Jordan Memorial Prize<br />
Awarded by the Australian Institute <strong>of</strong> Environmental Health<br />
(Victorian Division) to the environmental health student with<br />
the highest overall result in the final year <strong>of</strong> the course. The<br />
annual prize is usually books or an attache case to the value<br />
<strong>of</strong> $120.<br />
Undergraduate Scholarships<br />
Three or four scholarships available upon application from<br />
students completing first year <strong>of</strong> the chemistry or<br />
biochemistry courses. The scholarship value is $9.000 per<br />
annum for three years.<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Computer Science<br />
Postgraduate research scholarships for Master <strong>of</strong> Applied<br />
Science or Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy are available under the<br />
following two schemes: (Ently qualifications <strong>of</strong> at least an<br />
honours degree or equivalent are required.)<br />
Fee Exemption Scholarship<br />
Scholarships covering tuition fees only are available to<br />
students who are not Australian permanent residents. These<br />
scholarships are awarded for one year in the first instance<br />
and may be extended. Additional income from tutorial<br />
duties may be available for students with appropriate skills.<br />
Departmental Scholarship<br />
This scheme provides a stipend <strong>of</strong> $10,000 pa. In addition, a<br />
teaching assistantship may be negotiated up to an<br />
additional $5.100 pa. The successful candidate may hold the<br />
scholarship for up to two years for a Masters program or<br />
three years for a PhD program. Renewal <strong>of</strong> the teaching<br />
assistantship shall be subject to adequate performance <strong>of</strong><br />
teaching duties.<br />
Four prizes are currently available to Computer Science<br />
students:<br />
Aspect Computing Prize<br />
Amount <strong>of</strong> $1,000 awarded to a student in the final year <strong>of</strong><br />
a computing degree course (not BIT) on the basis <strong>of</strong> results<br />
in second year computing units. The student should have<br />
completed IBL if they are undertaking a degree which has<br />
an IBL component. The department nominates up to three<br />
students. Aspect Computing interviews these students and<br />
then awards the prize. (Note: Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business<br />
(Computing) students also compete for this prize.)<br />
Australian Computer Society Prize<br />
Amount <strong>of</strong> $150 awarded to the 'best' student on a degree<br />
accredited by the ACS at level one or two. Students are<br />
evaluated on the basis <strong>of</strong> their aggregate performance on<br />
final year computing units.<br />
Currently, three prizes are awarded for degreesldiplomas<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered by the department: Computing and Instrumentation,<br />
Mathematics and Computer Science, and the Graduate<br />
Diploma in Applied Science (Computer Science). It is<br />
expected that a prize will also be awarded for the Bachelor<br />
<strong>of</strong> Information <strong>Technology</strong> degree and in the Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />
Applied Science (Computer Science and S<strong>of</strong>tware<br />
Engineering) from 1993 on.<br />
The department nominates the best student in each<br />
degreeldiploma.<br />
Ada Association Prize<br />
Amount <strong>of</strong> $200 awarded to the student on the<br />
BAppSc(Cornputer Science) who achieves the highest marks<br />
in unit 54400 Concurrent Programming. This was awarded<br />
for the first time in 1992. The department nominates the<br />
best student.<br />
S<strong>of</strong>tware Practice 1 Competition Prize<br />
Amount <strong>of</strong> $100. All students in unit 54103 S<strong>of</strong>tware<br />
Practice 1 are invited to participate in a programming<br />
contest in semester two. Students work in teams (generally<br />
<strong>of</strong> two people) at developing a solution to a programming<br />
problem. The winning team is that whose program performs<br />
optimally according to predetermined criterion.<br />
Entries are sought as part <strong>of</strong> the SQ103 program in second<br />
semester.<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Mathematics<br />
Graduate Research Scholarshio<br />
Amount <strong>of</strong> $15,500 awarded based on academic<br />
achiemt comnting <strong>of</strong> a good honours degree and work<br />
experience.<br />
The ASOR Medal (Australian Society <strong>of</strong><br />

Awarded to the best final year Operations Research student<br />
at the <strong>University</strong>, by the Operations Research Society <strong>of</strong>
