no64 Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business (Honours)<br />
Introduction<br />
The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business (Honours) program provides<br />
students with an opportunity to enhance their research<br />
ability and permits further studies and specialisation in their<br />
discipline. The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business (Honours) program is<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered by the Departments <strong>of</strong> Accounting, Business Lwv,<br />
Business Modelling, Economics, Information Systems,<br />
Marketing and Organisation Behaviour.<br />
It is a program that <strong>of</strong>fers students the opportunity to add<br />
considerable depth to their understanding <strong>of</strong> concepts within<br />
their chosen discipline and encourages students to pursue<br />
excellence in their studies at a higher level.<br />
The program encourages a multidisciplinary approach by<br />
permitting students to undertake, where appropriate,<br />
subjects <strong>of</strong>fered by other departments, faculties or<br />
institutions.<br />
Program duration<br />
The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business (Honours) program may be undertaken<br />
over one year full-time or over two consecutive years<br />
part-time.<br />
Admission requirements<br />
A student may be admitted into the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business<br />
(Honours) program if they have satisfied the requirements for<br />
a <strong>Swinburne</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business degree and have achieved<br />
an average level <strong>of</strong> attainment <strong>of</strong> a credit (C) or better in an<br />
appropriate discipline or range <strong>of</strong> disciplines considered by<br />
the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Business Honours Committee to be acceptable<br />
for entry to the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business (Honours) program.<br />
Program timetable<br />
The honours program consists <strong>of</strong> a 25% research methodology<br />
component, a 25% discipline specific component and<br />
a 50% research project component.<br />
Resea~h methodology component<br />
The research methodology unit (84405) aims to equip<br />
students with the necessary research skills to conduct studies<br />
for higher degrees. It is designed to facilitate the<br />
development <strong>of</strong> independent learning skills. Students will be<br />
presented with various research methodologies appropriate<br />
to their chosen discipline as well as those used in other<br />
disciplines. Two thirds <strong>of</strong> the unit will be presented as a<br />
common core, with one third <strong>of</strong> the syllabus being discipline<br />
specific. Assessment will be based on assignments, case<br />
studies and presentations and teaching methods will include<br />
formal lectures and tutorial discussion groups and will make<br />
extensive use <strong>of</strong> library resources.<br />
This unit is compulsory for all Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business (Honours)<br />
students and no prerequisite is necessary. Subject to approval<br />
from the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Business Honours Committee, a pass in<br />
an equivalent subject at a graduate level may entitle the<br />
student to an exemption from this unit.<br />
Discipline specific and resea~h<br />
components<br />
Students should seek advice from the Honours Convener in<br />
the appropriate department when formulating their<br />
discipline-specific course <strong>of</strong> study and their research project<br />
proposal.<br />
Students may, subject to approval, undertake selected<br />
honours level coursework units from other departments,<br />
faculties, or institutions provided that they show the<br />
relevance <strong>of</strong> these coursework units to their proposed area<br />
<strong>of</strong> research. Such arrangements are subject to the student<br />
having any necessary prerequisite studies and may be subject<br />
to any quotas imposed on these units by the <strong>of</strong>fering<br />
department.<br />
Students must submit a proposal to their Honours Convener<br />
for approval prior to the commencement <strong>of</strong> their honours<br />
program. Approval for a student's discipline specific course<br />
<strong>of</strong> study and research project proposal shall be subject to<br />
the availability <strong>of</strong> any necessary resources and the availability<br />
<strong>of</strong> appropriate staff supervision. Research projects may be<br />
individually supervised or supervised within a group seminar<br />
setting.<br />
As part <strong>of</strong> the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business (Honours) program,<br />
students may be required to make class presentations at<br />
progressive stages in their program and to attend and<br />
participate fully in a series <strong>of</strong> seminars conducted by staff.<br />
At the end <strong>of</strong> their research component students will be<br />
required to submit a written dissertation <strong>of</strong> approximately<br />
15,000 words in length.<br />

Arts - double degree<br />
The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> BusinessIBachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts double degree is<br />
<strong>of</strong> four years duration (thirty-two units) and is designed to<br />
enable students to complete the compulsory requirements<br />
for any business major and minor together with the full<br />
range <strong>of</strong> available Japanese, Korean, Italian or Vietnamese<br />
units in order to complete the requirements <strong>of</strong> two degrees.<br />

Degree structure<br />
Students must complete the core units <strong>of</strong> the business<br />
degree (seven units) and a major and minor in the Faculty <strong>of</strong><br />
Business, a minimum <strong>of</strong> seventeen units; plus eleven<br />
mandatory units in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts; and elective units<br />
which may be selected from subjects <strong>of</strong>fered by either<br />
faculty. Students should <strong>note</strong> that a maximum <strong>of</strong> twelve<br />
stage one units can be credited towards the Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />
Business/Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts.<br />
