Subject aims<br />
This unit aims to provide a practical knowledge and<br />
awareness <strong>of</strong> the laws which impinge upon the function <strong>of</strong><br />
retailing, concentrating upon those areas affecting the dayto-day<br />
activities <strong>of</strong> the business.<br />
Subject description<br />
Topics covered in this unit include the liability <strong>of</strong> retailers<br />
under the laws <strong>of</strong> contract and negligence, crime and<br />
retailing, establishing a retail business, franchising, the<br />
retailer and credit, the retailer and safety, trade description<br />
and consumer protection laws, and other general rights and<br />
duties owed by retailers.<br />

Subject aims<br />
To introduce the student to areas <strong>of</strong> law specifically relevant<br />
to the tourism and travel industry, and the practical<br />
application <strong>of</strong> such laws. The unit will be <strong>of</strong> particular use to<br />
students undertaking services marketing.<br />
Subject description<br />
Topio covered include contract law, consumer protection,<br />
insurance, international conventions for carriers, trawl agents,<br />
legislation, passport and other trawl controls, business<br />
structures and business protection.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />
The unit is designed to acquaint students with various<br />
contemporary issues in company law, especially relevant to a<br />
future public practice in accounting. The course examines<br />
current topics in such areas as the constitutional and<br />
jurisdictional framework <strong>of</strong> company law, company direction<br />
and management, company conflict and company mis:<br />
feasance. In recent years the course has focused substantially<br />
on company insolvency.<br />

The general objective is to assess the impact <strong>of</strong> law upon<br />
the relationship <strong>of</strong> employer and employee. The following<br />
matters are analysed in this unit:<br />
the contract <strong>of</strong> employment - formation <strong>of</strong> the contract<br />
<strong>of</strong> employment including discrimination and compulsory<br />
unionism, distinguishing an employee from an<br />
independent contractor, the terms <strong>of</strong> the contract <strong>of</strong><br />
employment, common law remedies for wrongful<br />
termination;<br />
the arbitration system - the structure <strong>of</strong> the Australian<br />
Arbitration System, the constitutional context, the srjtem<br />
in operation in settling disputes and making awards,<br />
enterprise bargaining;
