Fees<br />

The full-time tuition fees are expected to be $2,400 for each<br />

year. Individual course providers may include other costs for<br />

services provided. Details about any <strong>of</strong> these costs should be<br />

obtained from the course providers at Billanook, Eastern and<br />

General information<br />

Status<br />

Full-time<br />

The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts course requires three years <strong>of</strong> full-time<br />

study, during which time twenty semester subjects or<br />

equivalent in full-year subjects must be passed.<br />

Part-time<br />

Many students undertake their courses by part-time study.<br />

This would usually take five years, but the time may vary<br />

according to the study time available to the student.<br />

Career opportunities<br />

The course is designed to foster individual student development,<br />

to develop skills and encourage investigation and<br />

enquiry which may be applied to a range <strong>of</strong> situations. Arts<br />

students learn how to gather, synthesize and assess information,<br />

how to conceptualise issues, and to express themselves<br />

effectively both orally and in writing.<br />

Students may select courses which would be <strong>of</strong> particular<br />

value in following a career in such fields as: administration,<br />

personnel, publishing, public relations, media or allied work,<br />

and research services, or they may proceed to the degree <strong>of</strong><br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Arts and Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy. Graduates, after<br />

further study, may gain qualifications to become, for<br />

example, psychologists, librarians, sociologists or teachers.<br />

Mooroolbark campus<br />

The Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts <strong>of</strong>fers a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree program<br />

at the Mooroolbark campus. Students enrolled here may<br />

take majors in psychology, media studies, sociology,<br />

economics, literature, philosophy and cultural inquiry, and<br />

political studies..<br />

Currently Mooroolbark campus students who wish to study<br />

a language (Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese or Italian) must<br />

secure a place at the Hawthorn campus and be prepared to<br />

travel between campuses. The full range <strong>of</strong> subjects listed at<br />

the end <strong>of</strong> this section will not always: be <strong>of</strong>fered at the<br />

Mooroolbark campus.<br />

It may not always be possible for students to complete the<br />

third year <strong>of</strong> a major on that campus.<br />

Classes are <strong>of</strong>fered to full-time and part-time students in the<br />

day only at the Mooroolbark campus.<br />

Eligibility<br />

Applicants in the following categories will be considered for<br />

admission to the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree course.<br />

WE<br />

Grade D or better in four VCE subjects, including English.<br />

(Passes may be accumulated over more than one yeas)<br />

Selection <strong>of</strong> applicants <strong>of</strong> this type will be determined on<br />

the basis <strong>of</strong> their approved tertiary entrance score. A faculty<br />

quota for this type <strong>of</strong> entry will be applied.<br />

Mature-age entry<br />

Persons 21 years and over, and who may lack formal educational<br />

qualifications may apply. Applications will be considered<br />

by the Undergraduate Selection Committee which<br />

will arrive at a subjective evaluation <strong>of</strong> each applicant's<br />

likelihood <strong>of</strong> completing the course. The Undergraduate<br />

Selection Committee will take into account an applicant's<br />

stated educational background, employment background,<br />

together with the written reasons for wishing to undertake<br />

the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree. A faculty quota for<br />

this type <strong>of</strong> entry will be applied.<br />

Special entry<br />

Persons under twenty-one years who have completed studies<br />

deemed by the <strong>University</strong> to be the equivalent <strong>of</strong> Year 12<br />

may apply. Applications will be considered by the<br />

Undergraduate Selection Committee which will arrive at a<br />

subjective evaluation <strong>of</strong> each applicant's likelihood <strong>of</strong><br />

completing the course. The Undergraduate Selection<br />

Committee will take into account an applicant's stated<br />

educational background together with the written reasons<br />

for wishing to undertake the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

degree. A faculty quota for this type <strong>of</strong> entry will be applied.<br />

Prospective students should ascertain the relevant closing<br />

dates for applications in September <strong>of</strong> the year preceding<br />

that in which they would like to commence studies.<br />

Single subject study<br />

It is possible to study a subject <strong>of</strong>fered by the Arts Faculty<br />

without enrolling in the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree.<br />

An application form is required for this, and is available from<br />

the Arts Faculty Office.<br />

Such subjects may be credited subsequently towards a<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> degree or diploma if approved by the Arts Faculty<br />

Board. A substantial tuition fee is payable.<br />

Entry for all eligibility categories is competitive. Applicants<br />

may be asked to attend an interview in connection with<br />

their application.<br />

Deferred entry<br />

Students who have been <strong>of</strong>fered a place in the Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />

Arts course for the first time may apply to defer their entry<br />

to the course for up to one year. Applications should be
