RG2ll History <strong>of</strong> Arts 2<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours for two<br />

semesters<br />

Prerequisites: RG140 Result <strong>of</strong> Studies 1<br />

Assessment: continuous<br />

This subject explores the developments in art and design<br />

from the post World War II era through to Post Modernism<br />

and the 1980s.<br />

The first semester concentrates on different theories <strong>of</strong><br />

symbology and the manner in which visual imagery;<br />

painting, graphics, advertising, etc., use symbolic language<br />

to convey messages about the political, psychic, social and<br />

cultural values <strong>of</strong> our society. Current issues <strong>of</strong> design theory<br />

are also explored.<br />

Second semester begins with Abstract Expressionism, moves<br />

on to Assemblage, Performance Art and Earthworks, explores<br />

the 1960s boom in Popular Culture, and looks at Post<br />

Modernist themes in art, design and architecture.<br />

This subject aims to develop advanced skills in textual<br />

analysis; to identify, articulate and critique positions taken in<br />

current media debates and to encourage pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in oral<br />

presentation and argument.<br />

Lectures and tutorials will interrogate cultural narratiws and<br />

their formal supports in the print and electronic media,<br />

particularly in relation to the production and regulation <strong>of</strong><br />

the social body.<br />

semesters<br />

Prerequisites: RG240 Result <strong>of</strong> Studies 2<br />

Assessment: continuous<br />

N.B.: additional work required outside scheduled<br />

hours, including evenings and weekends<br />

The final-year student is encouraged to move towards one <strong>of</strong><br />

the main studies with the aim <strong>of</strong> producing solutions to<br />

advanced problems <strong>of</strong> communication design at a<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional level, e.g. advertising design in various graphic<br />

media, publication design, corporate image design and<br />

educational technology. Special bias studies are <strong>of</strong>fered,<br />

8 including photography, illustration; three-dimensional design,<br />

2 audio-visual and publication design.<br />

. RG303 Industrial Year<br />

RG322 Print <strong>Technology</strong><br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: two hours for one<br />

semester<br />

Prerequisite: RG240 Result <strong>of</strong> Studies 2<br />

Assessment: continuous<br />

Investigations into the theory and application <strong>of</strong> modern<br />

print technology. It is not intended that this course will go<br />

deeply into the electronics, mechanics or chemistry <strong>of</strong><br />

printing, but rather explore the possibilities for design,<br />

production and distribution created by modern reproduction<br />

methods. These include type composition, photo-mechanical<br />

processes (<strong>of</strong>fset, screen, letterpress and gravure), and<br />

studies <strong>of</strong> paper and other stocks.<br />

This course will include the economics <strong>of</strong> production and<br />

relate to sections <strong>of</strong> the course in business administration.<br />

Visits to production houses are arranged.<br />

RG335 Art and Design Culture<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours for two<br />

semesters<br />

Prerequisite: RG240 Result <strong>of</strong> Studies 2<br />

Assessment: continuous<br />

N.B.: it is expected that for students to<br />

satisfactorily complete this subject, additional<br />

time will be required to visit galleries, exhibitions<br />

and performances<br />

The study aims to facilitate a first-hand experience <strong>of</strong> art and<br />

design culture and the place it occupies within the<br />

functioning <strong>of</strong> our society.<br />

Various levels <strong>of</strong> cultural experience, encircling the personal,<br />

the pr<strong>of</strong>essional and the academic, will be explored. Regular<br />

outings to exhibitions, performances, films, seminars and<br />

public forums form a major component <strong>of</strong> the program.<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> the assessment students will create an experiential<br />

diary consisting <strong>of</strong> a combination <strong>of</strong> written and visual<br />

elements.<br />

RG410 Assigned Projects 4<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: twenty-one or twentyfour<br />

hours for two semestels<br />

Prerequisite: RG341 Result <strong>of</strong> Studies 3<br />

Assessment: continuous<br />

N.B.: additional work required outside scheduled<br />

hours, including evenings and weekends<br />

Working in a pr<strong>of</strong>essional atmosphere, emphasis is given to<br />

developing the student's special capabilities through assigned<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional projects or self-defined problems, culminating in<br />

a major design assignment.<br />

RG490 Design Management<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: two hours for one<br />

semester<br />

Prerequisite: RG341 Result <strong>of</strong> Studies 3<br />

Assessment: continuous<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> this subject is to give students a general<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the business environment with an<br />

emphasis on management in the visual communication<br />

industry.<br />

Specific come objectives are:<br />

To develop an understanding <strong>of</strong> graphic design<br />

management including setting-up and managing a design<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice, working with clients and graphic design project<br />

management.<br />

To develop skills in presentation and articulation <strong>of</strong> ideas.<br />

To gain experience in solving design management<br />

problems.<br />

To develop skills in written business communication and<br />

report writing.<br />

Aspects <strong>of</strong> the theory is incorporated in assigned project<br />

work <strong>of</strong> the cooperative degree stream and the pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

practice <strong>of</strong> the Graphic Design Centre (degree conversion).<br />

Students are required to submit two major written<br />

assignments based on information presented in the tutorials<br />

by the course co-ordinator and guest lecturers.
