Subject aims and description<br />
This subject aims to continue to develop skills in written and<br />
spoken Vietnamese. The focus will be on communicative<br />
active oral and written skills for a wide range <strong>of</strong> contexts.<br />
Topics covered will include contemporary issues directly<br />
relevant to the Vietnamese community <strong>of</strong> Australia, such as<br />
health, education, the law and immigration.<br />
Students will read and analyse texts to introduce new<br />
structures and vocabulary. For the listening and speaking<br />
sections, the emphasis is on the active production <strong>of</strong> the<br />
language to promote active recall <strong>of</strong> vocabulary items and<br />
their usage in the appropriate context using the correct<br />
grammatical forms in accordance with accepted<br />
conversational conventions.<br />
The teaching method is based on class work. By working<br />
through a series <strong>of</strong> graded and contextualised dialogues<br />
students will further develop reading, writing, listening and<br />
speaking skills. In addition, students will be required to<br />
participate in group discussions on topics selected by the<br />
lecturer.<br />

An outline <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> modern Vietnamese<br />
literary tradition will be given. Topics covered will cover areas<br />
<strong>of</strong> the arts, literature and history. Time will be devoted to the<br />
discussion <strong>of</strong> the social background to the emergence <strong>of</strong> the<br />
romanised system <strong>of</strong> writing, its role as a vehicle for social<br />
change, the influence <strong>of</strong> the Western tradition <strong>of</strong> thought<br />
and the role <strong>of</strong> the Tu Luc Van Doan group <strong>of</strong> writers.<br />
