6.4 Examination discipline<br />

When an apparent irregularity is observed in an<br />

examination room, the student will be informed<br />

immediately by the supervisor but will be permitted<br />

to finish the examination paper. The Examinations<br />

Officer will immediately report the circumstances to<br />

the Chief Examiner, the subject convener, and the<br />

heads <strong>of</strong> the appropriate teaching and awarding<br />

departments.<br />

At the conclusion <strong>of</strong> the examination the Chief<br />

Examiner will decide whether or not there has<br />

been an irregularity. If it is the decision <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Chief Exam~ner that there has been an irregularity,<br />

a meeting <strong>of</strong> the following persons will be<br />

convened:<br />

(a) the student concerned;<br />

(b) the subject convener;<br />

(c) and the heads <strong>of</strong> the awarding and teaching<br />

departments;<br />

to decide whether any penalty shall be imposed<br />

upon the student. The maximum penalty for cheating<br />

or other examination irregularity is that the<br />

student be permanently excluded from further<br />

study at the <strong>University</strong> and if any penalty is<br />

imposed the student shall be notified in writing.<br />

A student shall have the right <strong>of</strong> appeal as to the<br />

finding <strong>of</strong> the Chief Examiner andlor the penalty to<br />

a committee appointed for the purpose by the<br />

Vice-Chancellor.<br />

The Appeals Committee shall consist <strong>of</strong> five<br />

persons, <strong>of</strong> whom:<br />

(a) one shall be the nominee <strong>of</strong> the Chief<br />

Examiner;<br />

(b) one shall be a student <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />

nominated by the President <strong>of</strong> the Student<br />

Union;<br />

(c) one shall be the convener <strong>of</strong> the subject or his<br />

nominee;<br />

(d) two shall be nominated from the academic<br />

staff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>;<br />

provided that no member <strong>of</strong> the Appeals<br />

Committee shall have been a party to the original<br />

investigation.<br />

7. Results<br />

7.1 Result categories<br />

7.1 .I The following assessment categories only<br />

may be used to record a student's performance<br />

in a subject:<br />

High distinction (HD)<br />

Distinction (D)<br />

Credit<br />

(c)<br />

pass<br />

(P)<br />

~ opass<br />

t<br />

(N)<br />

Not pass - (NWD)<br />

late withdrawal Not pass because <strong>of</strong><br />

late withdrawal<br />

present any work for<br />

assessment either by<br />

examination or by other<br />

form <strong>of</strong> assessment or<br />

both.<br />

7.1.2 Where it is not appropriate for results in a<br />

subject to be issued through the full range<br />

<strong>of</strong> categories authorised by these<br />

regulations, two categories only shall be<br />

used:<br />

Pass<br />

(PI<br />

Not pass<br />

(N)<br />

If this provision is used a statement shall be<br />

included in the published results to the<br />

effect that only one category <strong>of</strong> satisfactory<br />

achievement was awarded in the subject<br />

concerned.<br />

7.1.3 The following notations are applicable in<br />

special circumstances:<br />

Special exam (SPX)<br />

Deferred<br />

(DEF)<br />

Continuing (CON)<br />

Exempt<br />

(EXMI<br />

7.1.4 In courses in engineering and applied<br />

science for which block passing schemes<br />

have been approved by the Academic Board<br />

the following results only may be used for<br />

'Faculty Result' subjects:<br />

Pass<br />

(P) where all individual<br />

subjects have been<br />

passed;<br />

Faculty pass (FP) where one or more<br />

subjects have been<br />

failed but the student is<br />

permitted to proceed to<br />

the next stage without<br />

being required to<br />

repeat the subject or<br />

subjects failed;<br />

Not pass<br />

(N) where one or more<br />

subjects have been<br />

failed and the student<br />

is required to repeat all<br />

or some <strong>of</strong> the subjects<br />

undertaken in the stage<br />

for which the faculty<br />

result <strong>of</strong> 'Not pass' was<br />

obtained.<br />

7.2 Processing results<br />

7.2.1 The convener shall submit the following to<br />

the head <strong>of</strong> the teaching department:<br />

7.2.1.1 The results recommended for each<br />

student enrolled for the subject;<br />

7.2.1.2 Such statistics as are required by the<br />

head <strong>of</strong> department and faculty<br />

board:<br />

7.2.1.3 A signed subject report in a form<br />

approved by the awarding faculty<br />

board, including:<br />

(a) certification that these regulations<br />

have been carried out;<br />

(b) statement <strong>of</strong> the assessment<br />

procedure followed;<br />

(c) copies <strong>of</strong> all examinations, tests<br />

and assignments;<br />

(d) where appropriate, copies <strong>of</strong> solutions<br />

or statements <strong>of</strong><br />

minimum qualities; and<br />

(e) an appraisal <strong>of</strong> the subject as a<br />

whole.
