Subject aims and description<br />

A final-year subject <strong>of</strong> the Degree <strong>of</strong> Building Surveying,<br />

which introduces students to organisation and management<br />

theory, to provide an understanding <strong>of</strong> the processes applied<br />

to industrial relations in Australia, deals with types <strong>of</strong><br />

contracts and administration <strong>of</strong> contracts and provides basic<br />

concepts <strong>of</strong> measuring and estimating materials and costs.<br />

The subject covers four main areas <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

Management<br />

Organisation and management theory. Management<br />

problems in organisations and ways <strong>of</strong> dealing with them.<br />

Recruitment job specification and advertisement. (56 hours.)<br />

Industrial relations<br />

The structure <strong>of</strong> collectiw bargaining conciliation and<br />

arbitration machinery, the structure and operations <strong>of</strong> trade<br />

unions and employer association, and the associated<br />

problems. Legislation dealing with equal opportunity and<br />

Occupational Health and Safety Workplace reform. Structure<br />

<strong>of</strong> awards. (28 hours.)<br />

Contracts and specifications<br />

Types <strong>of</strong> contracts and contract documents. Relationship<br />

between conditions <strong>of</strong> contract, specifications, drawings and<br />

bill <strong>of</strong> quantities. Understanding and preparation <strong>of</strong><br />

specifications. Administration and enforcement <strong>of</strong> contract.<br />

Construction measurement and estimating<br />

Measuring the materials and elements <strong>of</strong> a project.<br />

Application <strong>of</strong> basic rules to estimate cost. Quality control.<br />

Estimating field work. (28 hours.)<br />

Setting <strong>of</strong> objectives, measurement <strong>of</strong> performance,<br />

introduction to the marketing function, sales, market<br />

research, segmentation, etc. Innovation and entrepreneurial<br />

aspects.<br />

Business theories and practice<br />

Modern theories <strong>of</strong> management and current practices. For<br />

example: total quality management, value adding<br />

management, just-in-time.<br />

Supervision and leadership, practical industrial relations,<br />

negotiating, arbitration and conciliation, occupational health<br />

and safety, selection and training, project teams and task<br />

forces.<br />

Motivation, job enrichment, employee participation.<br />

Time management, effective speaking, writing, reading,<br />

creative thinking, lateral thinking, technical communication<br />

skills.<br />

Problem analysis, problem solving, decision making.<br />

Construction techniques<br />

Construction techniques: industrial and commercial buildings,<br />

medium and high rise buildings in steel, reinforced and<br />

prestressed concrete, tilt-up construction formwork in timber<br />

and steel, climbing formwork table and slip forms.<br />

Concrete technology: materials, plant, mix design, high<br />

strength concrete, admixtures, delivery systems, formwork,<br />

placing, curing, testing.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

A final-year subject <strong>of</strong> the Degree <strong>of</strong> Building Surveying,<br />

intended to further develop students' understanding <strong>of</strong> the<br />

principles underlying the relevant regulations, acts, codes<br />

and standards and their application to major projects.<br />

Administration and law: in-depth study <strong>of</strong> building surveyor's<br />

duties and his legislative responsibilities.<br />

Functions: the consultative role <strong>of</strong> the building surveyor in<br />

council and private practice.<br />

Acts and regulations: analysis <strong>of</strong> regulations and detailed<br />

study <strong>of</strong> total regulations and principles and a general ability<br />

to relate to all relevant codes and standards. Anomalies in<br />

the act and regulations and procedures to overcome these.<br />

Redrafting <strong>of</strong> regulations.<br />

Plan checking and assignments: assignments will cover<br />

aspects such as council reports and meetings, joint reports,<br />

fast track process, major building approvals, dealing with<br />

multi-storey buildings.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

A final-year subject <strong>of</strong> the Degree <strong>of</strong> Building Surveying,<br />

which deals with the regulatory and statutory aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

urban planning.<br />

Topics covered are: planning at the local and regional level.<br />

Planning law: acts and legislation. Government town<br />

planning in Victoria. Planning appeals: preparation for an<br />

appeal and participation in the appeals system. Urban<br />

landscape: concepts relating to permit applications.<br />
