Career potential<br />

Using their knowledge <strong>of</strong> chemical principles and their<br />

application to industrial problems such graduates take up<br />

positions with private and public companies or with<br />

government and semi-government organisations such as<br />

CSIRO. Initially graduates usually work in laboratories<br />

associated with manufacturing (industrial and agricultural<br />

chemicals, textiles, explosives, fertilizers, detergents, plastics,<br />

dyes, paints, pharmaceuticals, etc.) or in the processing <strong>of</strong><br />

food, coal, oil, gas, minerals, etc.<br />

Further opportunities exist in research, development,<br />

technical services, sales, government organisations concerned<br />

with health and environment and administration.<br />

2060 Computer Science (conversion<br />

course)<br />

The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Applied Science (Computer Science)<br />

conversion program is available only for students who have<br />

completed an associate diploma which includes computer<br />

programming. It is <strong>of</strong>fered full-time over two years and<br />

comprises a full computer science major together with a<br />

minor sequence in another discipline. Two semesters <strong>of</strong><br />

mathematics are compulsory for all students who have not<br />

passed an equivalent amount <strong>of</strong> mathematics beyond year<br />

12.<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> the degree will have completed four years <strong>of</strong><br />

tertiary education in computing, and gained extensive<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> computer systems and s<strong>of</strong>tware development,<br />

together with well developed written and verbal<br />

communication skills. During the course, experience is gained<br />

in programming, systems analysis and design, and project<br />

management.<br />

Career potential<br />

Graduates will typically find initial employment as<br />

programmers or analysts, and have good prospects for rapid<br />

advancement to advanced technical or managerial positions.<br />

Full-time course (1993 syllabus)<br />

Minor sequences are <strong>of</strong>fered in applied mathematics,<br />

accounting, economics and organisational<br />

behaviourlmarketing. Elective subjects <strong>of</strong>fered, however, will<br />

depend upon demand and available resources.<br />

To complete the program, students must pass subjects to<br />

the value <strong>of</strong> 200 credit points. At least 120 credit points<br />

must be in computer science subjects. There are no<br />

exemptions. Each full-time year <strong>of</strong> study normally comprises<br />

a selection <strong>of</strong> subjects to the value <strong>of</strong> 100 credit pdints<br />

taken over two semesters. Most subjects are worth 10.0<br />

credit points so that a standard program comprises five<br />

equally weighted subjects per semester. However, subjects in<br />

mathematics vary between 7.5, 10.0 and 12.5 credit points,<br />

whereas business subjects are normally worth 12.5 credit<br />

points.<br />

A minor sequence in another discipline will normally consist<br />

<strong>of</strong> a coherent sequence <strong>of</strong> subjects to the value <strong>of</strong> at least<br />

40 but no more than 50 credit points. For example a<br />

business minor sequence will comprise four subjects each<br />

worth 12.5 credit points.<br />
