e given access by that organisation to restricted<br />

information which the candidate or the organisation<br />

does not wish to disclose freely. In such cases the<br />

Faculty Board must receive, in writing, from the<br />

organisation, notice <strong>of</strong> such materials and the reason<br />

why, in its opinion, disclosure would be undesirable.<br />

Where such material is involved the Faculty Board's<br />

prior approval is obtained, the candidate may submit a<br />

thesis in two volumes, one containing the general<br />

thesis, the second containing only the restricted data or<br />

information.<br />

The Faculty Board may restrict access to the second<br />

volume for a specified period.<br />

Where the thesis has only one volume, the Faculty<br />

Board, on receipt <strong>of</strong> a request in writing from the<br />

candidate and supported by a statement in writing<br />

from the Head <strong>of</strong> Department, may order that, for a<br />

period <strong>of</strong> up to three years from the date <strong>of</strong> that order,<br />

the copies <strong>of</strong> the thesis fowarded to the <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

Library and the department shall be made available<br />

only to researchers or readers specifically authorised in<br />

writing by the Faculty Board.<br />

13. Copyright<br />

Copyright in the thesis is the property <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>. Those rights, or any part <strong>of</strong><br />

them, may be assigned by Council, on the advice <strong>of</strong><br />

the Faculty Board, to the candidate.<br />

14. Regulations<br />

The Faculty Board may recommend to the Academic<br />

Board that regulations be made under this statute<br />

regarding the admission to candidature, reports on<br />

candidates during the period <strong>of</strong> candidature, the<br />

examination <strong>of</strong> candidates and related matters.<br />

15. Change in statute<br />

This statute may be amended from time to time by<br />

Council on the advice <strong>of</strong> the Academic Board acting on<br />

the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the Faculty Board. In the event<br />

<strong>of</strong> an amendment being made subsequent to the<br />

beginning <strong>of</strong> a student's candidature, that candidate<br />

may elect to continue under the statute which was in<br />

effect at the time candidature began.<br />

Statute for the degree <strong>of</strong><br />

Master (by publication)<br />

1. Definitions<br />

1.1 General<br />

Committee means the Higher Degrees Committee<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Academic Board;<br />

Council means the Council <strong>of</strong> Swinbume <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>;<br />

Univeaity means <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Technology</strong>;<br />

Faculty Board means the sub-committee <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong>'s Academic Board called the 'Faculty<br />

Board' (or any authorised sub-committee there<strong>of</strong>)<br />

which is responsible for studies being undertaken<br />

in the area;<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> Department means the person appointed<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> Department or elected Chair <strong>of</strong><br />

Department responsible for studies in the particular<br />

discipline.<br />

1.2 Publication<br />

Publication is a major published paper, a corledion<br />

<strong>of</strong> papers or a monograph. A publication must be<br />

based on original research, investigation or<br />

developmental work carried out by the candidate in<br />

an industrial, commercial, governmental,<br />

educational or research organisation, or carried out<br />

as a member <strong>of</strong> the staff <strong>of</strong> a college <strong>of</strong> advanced<br />

education provided that the subject and nature <strong>of</strong><br />

the research work are accepted by the <strong>University</strong> as<br />

appropriate for examination <strong>of</strong> the award <strong>of</strong> the<br />

degree <strong>of</strong> Master.<br />

Title <strong>of</strong> degree<br />

The degree <strong>of</strong> Master may be awarded in a field <strong>of</strong><br />

study <strong>of</strong> any faculty <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>. Degrees shall be<br />

designated as follows:<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Applied Science MAppSc<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

. MA<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

MBus<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Engineering MEng<br />

3. Grading <strong>of</strong> degree<br />

The degree <strong>of</strong> Master shall be awarded in one grade<br />

only.<br />

4. Admission to candidature<br />

4.1 Admission requirements<br />

A candidate for a degree <strong>of</strong> Master by publication<br />

shall:<br />

(a) have held for a minimum period <strong>of</strong> five years:<br />

(i) a degree <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> or <strong>of</strong> any other<br />

institution approved by the Committee for<br />

this purpose; or<br />

(ii) such other qualification or experience as<br />

might be accepted as equivalent to (i)<br />

above.<br />

(b) submit to the <strong>University</strong> a publication or<br />

publications.<br />

4.2 Application<br />

No application for admission to candidature may<br />

be approved by the Committee except with the<br />

support <strong>of</strong> the appropriate faculty board.<br />

5. For the purpose <strong>of</strong> assessing an application, the<br />

<strong>University</strong> shall require that any publication submitted<br />

in respect <strong>of</strong> the application:<br />

(a) has been the subject <strong>of</strong> critical independent<br />

examination;<br />

(b) is available to the general public; and<br />

(c) where it consists <strong>of</strong> several papers, relates to one<br />

aspect <strong>of</strong> the same subject.<br />

6. A report issued by an organisation shall not, without<br />

the express consent <strong>of</strong> the organisation and the<br />

<strong>University</strong>, be accepted as a publication for the purpose<br />

<strong>of</strong> this statute.<br />

7. In the event <strong>of</strong> joint publication, the applicant shall provide<br />

the <strong>University</strong> with a written statement indicating<br />

the extent and nature <strong>of</strong> the applicant's personal<br />

contribution to the project. The applicant's statement<br />

should be countersigned by the joint author@) and<br />

supervisor (where applicable), or a written statement<br />

should be provided by the joint author($ and<br />

supervisor (where applicable).<br />

8. The publication submitted should represent work which<br />

is considered by the appropriate faculty board to be the<br />

equivalent <strong>of</strong> two years full-time study.
