10.2 The finding <strong>of</strong> such an appeal shall be<br />

communicated to the appellant within fourteen<br />

days <strong>of</strong> the appeal being lodged.<br />

11. Complaints <strong>of</strong> discrimination - external<br />

procedures<br />

11.1 In the case <strong>of</strong> a grievance being concerned with<br />

allegations <strong>of</strong> discrimination against the<br />

complainant on the grounds <strong>of</strong> that person's<br />

status or private life, the complainant has the<br />

right to present a complaint to the appropriate<br />

external authority.<br />

11.2 Where internal grievance procedures are being<br />

followed, the complainant may wish to refer the<br />

matter to the appropriate external authority at<br />

any stage <strong>of</strong> the process, and in particular:<br />

a) when no further action is taken;<br />

b) when helshe may wish to appeal against the<br />

Committee's decision.<br />

11.3 Where the matter is taken up with the external<br />

authority, the internal grievance procedure shall<br />

cease to apply in the case.<br />

1 1.4 The appropriate external authority in the case <strong>of</strong><br />

discrimination complaints is the Office <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Commissioner for Equal Opportunity in Victoria.<br />

12. Confidentiality<br />

12.1 Confidentiality will be strictly obselved<br />

throughout the conciliation and resolution<br />

process. lnformation and records related to<br />

complaints will be considered exempt documents<br />

under Freedom <strong>of</strong> lnformation legislation.<br />

13. Record keeping and storage<br />

13.1 The written record <strong>of</strong> the complaint will be<br />

retained for a period <strong>of</strong> twelve months in a<br />

confidential manner.<br />

13.2 Where all appeal mechanisms are exhausted or<br />

where the complaint is not sustained, written<br />

documentation <strong>of</strong> the case will be destroyed.<br />

13.3 The Manager, Equity Unit shall have access to<br />

statistical information concerning discrimination<br />

related complaints.<br />

14. Conflict <strong>of</strong> interest<br />

14.1 If the Head <strong>of</strong> Department feels that to<br />

undertake conciliation <strong>of</strong> a complaint would<br />

place himlherself in the situation <strong>of</strong> a conflict <strong>of</strong><br />

interest, the Head <strong>of</strong> Department will direct the<br />

student to take the grievance to the Dean or the<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> School.<br />

14.2 A complainant may at any stage <strong>of</strong> the informal<br />

procedure seek the assistance <strong>of</strong> the Dean or<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> School if helshe believes a conflict <strong>of</strong><br />

interest exists or may arise as a result <strong>of</strong> the<br />

complaint.<br />

15. R~SOUK~S<br />

15.1 The complainant may at any stage <strong>of</strong> the<br />

grievance procedure approach where relevant,<br />

the following <strong>of</strong>fices or persons for advice<br />

andlor support:<br />

a) Student Union;<br />

b) <strong>Swinburne</strong> Student Services;<br />

C) Equity Unit.<br />

15.2 Members <strong>of</strong> staff so contacted are advised to<br />

direct the complainant to hislher Head <strong>of</strong><br />

Department.<br />

15.3 The respondent may approach the staff<br />

association or union for advice and support.<br />

Statute for the degree <strong>of</strong><br />

Master (by research)<br />

1. Definitions<br />

In this statute:<br />

Council means the Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Technology</strong>;<br />

Unive~ity means <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>;<br />

Faculty Board means the sub-committee <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong>'s Academic Board called the 'Faculty Board'<br />

(or any authorised sub-committee there<strong>of</strong>) which is<br />

responsible for studies being undertaken in the area;<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> Department means the person appointed Head<br />

<strong>of</strong> Department or elected as Chair <strong>of</strong> Department<br />

responsible for studies in the particular discipline.<br />

2. Title <strong>of</strong> degree<br />

The degree <strong>of</strong> Master may be awarded in a field <strong>of</strong><br />

study <strong>of</strong> any faculty <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>. Degrees shall be<br />

designated as follows:<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Applied Science<br />

MAppSc<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

MA<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

MBus<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Engineering<br />

MEng<br />

3. Grading <strong>of</strong> degree<br />

The degree <strong>of</strong> Master shall be awarded in one grade<br />

only.<br />

4. Admission to candidature<br />

4.1 Entry requirements<br />

A person wishing to be admitted to candidature<br />

shall have:<br />

4.1.1 qualified, at a sufficiently meritorious standard,<br />

for a degree <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> (in a field<br />

relwant to the work proposed) or such<br />

other degree as the Faculty Board may<br />

deem equivalent for this purpose; or<br />

4.1.2 qualified for an award judged by the Faculty<br />

Board to be <strong>of</strong> relevant character and<br />

appropriate standard; and have experience<br />

which the Faculty Board deems to be a<br />

suitable preparation for the applicant's<br />

proposed field <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

4.2 Application<br />

No application for admission to candidature may<br />

be approved by the Faculty Board except with the<br />

support <strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> Department.<br />

4.3 Supervision and facilities<br />

An applicant shall be admitted to candidature only<br />

if the Faculty Board is satisfied that the proposed<br />

program is a suitable study in the discipline or area<br />

concerned and that adequate facilities and<br />

supervision are available.<br />

5. Program<br />

The candidate shall carry out a program <strong>of</strong> research,<br />

investigation or development involving the submission<br />

<strong>of</strong> a major thesis embodying the results <strong>of</strong> that<br />

program carried out during the period <strong>of</strong> candidature<br />

in:
