cs1901 History <strong>of</strong> Art (Design) 1<br />

Prerequisites: nil<br />

A survey covering the history <strong>of</strong> design and art movements<br />

from ancient times ot the late nineteenth century, including<br />

relevant aspects <strong>of</strong> the culture, ideology and technology <strong>of</strong><br />

the various phases. The way the development <strong>of</strong><br />

technologies influenced design and the manner in which<br />

styles in design and the visual arts arise and interlink are<br />

also examined during the lecture and tutorial program.<br />

CS2902 History <strong>of</strong> Art (Design) 2<br />

semester<br />

Prerequisite: History <strong>of</strong> Art (Design) 1<br />

Developing the first semester survey, the second semester<br />

deals with stylistic derivations and influences in art,<br />

architecture and design within recent times and focuses on<br />

the emergence <strong>of</strong> the designer as a separate entity. This will<br />

include the growth <strong>of</strong> individually designed products and<br />

innwative developments over the last century.<br />

CS3903 History <strong>of</strong> Art (Design) 3<br />

semester<br />

Prerequisite: History <strong>of</strong> Art (Design) 2<br />

The study program <strong>of</strong> lectures and tutorials examines the<br />

post-war shift <strong>of</strong> international mainstream art and design<br />

interest to the North American continent. It also investigates<br />

the European situation, and how both regions influenced<br />

Australian artists and designers. The program then begins to<br />

focus particularly on the Australian situation, its background,<br />

intellectual and theoretical underpinning, and the<br />

dewlopment <strong>of</strong> Australian art, design and culture since<br />

World War 2.<br />

CS4904 History <strong>of</strong> Art (Design) 4<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: two hours for one<br />

semester<br />

Prerequisite: History <strong>of</strong> Art (Design) 3<br />

Based on the previous semester, this unit makes a study <strong>of</strong><br />

late twentieth century art and design and <strong>of</strong> issues <strong>of</strong> special<br />

concern to design students, such as the role <strong>of</strong> the designer<br />

in society. A comparative surwy is also made <strong>of</strong> the design<br />

<strong>of</strong> a contrasting culture.<br />

4. This unit <strong>of</strong>fers an intensive analrjis <strong>of</strong> selected influential<br />

international art and design movements <strong>of</strong> contemporary<br />

relevance and examines the ways they have affected design<br />

in Australia.<br />

CS5915 Art and Design Culture<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours for one<br />

semester<br />

N.B.: it is expected that for students to<br />

satisfactorily complete this subject, additional<br />

time will be required to visit galleries, exhibitions<br />

and performances<br />

The study aims to facilitate a first-hand experience <strong>of</strong> art and<br />

design culture and the place it occupies within the<br />

functioning <strong>of</strong> our society.<br />

Various levels <strong>of</strong> cultural experience, encircling the personal,<br />

the pr<strong>of</strong>essional and the academic, will be explored. Regular<br />

outings to exhibitions, performances, films, seminars and<br />

public forums for a major component <strong>of</strong> the program.<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> the assessment students will create an experiential<br />

diary consisting <strong>of</strong> a combination <strong>of</strong> written and visual<br />

elements.<br />

ID1901 Engineering Drawing 1<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours for one<br />

semester<br />

Prerequisite: nil<br />

Details <strong>of</strong> the program are as follows:<br />

engineering drawings (to AS1 100 and UI manuals)<br />

basic geometry; ellipses, helix, involutes<br />

details <strong>of</strong> machine elements<br />

details <strong>of</strong> screws, fasteners and weld<br />

introduction to tolerancing, including: linear, bilinear,<br />

limitslfii, geometric tolerancing<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> drawings: title blocks, detail, assembly,<br />

specification, installation drawings<br />

metrology: micrometers, verniers, general methods used.<br />

ID1907 Industrial Design 1<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: twelve hours for one<br />

semester<br />

Prerequisite: nil<br />

The unit will include basic design exercises with projects that<br />

include drawing and manual skills. A large proportion<br />

includes the use <strong>of</strong> workshop equipment and materials such<br />

as plastics, metals and timber. Skills in model-making,<br />

preparation <strong>of</strong> design briefs, drawing-up terms <strong>of</strong> reference,<br />

ability to draw-up and collate research material, and the<br />

ability to present ideas and to plan out problem-solvinq<br />

techniques are demonstrated. Techniques including mgdia<br />

handling and presentation will be taught.<br />

ID1914 Workshop Techniques 1<br />

No.<strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours for one<br />

semester<br />

Prerequisite: nil<br />

This unit will discuss the timber industry, including timber<br />

types, selection and saw milling. Wood machining, especially<br />

where it relates to the preparation <strong>of</strong> timber suitable for<br />

furniture construction and model-making will be discussed.<br />

The wood machining equipment, after demonstration <strong>of</strong> the<br />

capabilities and safety requirements for each machine, will<br />

be used by the student under staff supervision to produce a<br />

series <strong>of</strong> four models representing typical product design<br />

projects.<br />

Prerequisite: nil<br />

The unit deals with observation and drawing skills. Through<br />

a series <strong>of</strong> tutorials and class exercises, students are<br />

introduced to basic sketching and freehand drawing<br />

techniques using a variety <strong>of</strong> media including pencil, pastel,<br />

marker, poster paint and pen and wash.
