2.1.1 the facilitation <strong>of</strong> learning which includes<br />

such matters as:<br />

(a) helping to establish learning situations<br />

appropriate to the needs, abilities and<br />

potentialities <strong>of</strong> the individual student;<br />

(b) enabling the diagnosis and alleviation <strong>of</strong><br />

specific learning difficulties;<br />

(c) motivating and directing learning experiences;<br />

(d) developing and maintaining skills and<br />

abilities.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the most effective way; <strong>of</strong><br />

facilitating learning is to provide the student<br />

with 'feed-back', that is, to let the student<br />

know, as soon as possible after they are<br />

discerned, any specific errors.<br />

misunderstandings and shortcomings, and<br />

then to assist in overcoming them.<br />

2.1.2 the certification <strong>of</strong> the lwel <strong>of</strong> achiwement<br />

which students have reached in subjects<br />

andlor courses at <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Technology</strong>;<br />

2.1.3 assistance with the evaluation and review <strong>of</strong><br />

course content and objectives;<br />

2.1.4 assistance with the evaluation and review <strong>of</strong><br />

methods <strong>of</strong> instruction.<br />

2.2 Although these regulations concentrate chiefly on<br />

the certification aspect <strong>of</strong> assessment, the<br />

Academic Board considers that the other functions<br />

<strong>of</strong> assessment stated in section 2.1 above are <strong>of</strong><br />

even greater importance in the educative process.<br />

3. Forms <strong>of</strong> assessment<br />

3.1 Without limiting the generality here<strong>of</strong>, assessment<br />

<strong>of</strong> students enrolled in a subject may be<br />

undertaken in any <strong>of</strong> the following, or any<br />

combination <strong>of</strong> the following:<br />

3.1.1 examination at the conclusion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

duration <strong>of</strong> the subject;<br />

3.1.2 formal or informal tests conducted at any<br />

time from the commencement <strong>of</strong> the<br />

subject to the end <strong>of</strong> the examination<br />

period designated under these regulations;<br />

3.1.3 assignment, project work, field work, essay,<br />

report or such other activities as the subject<br />

panel shall see fit.<br />

4. Subject panels<br />

4.1 For each subject for which a result is required there<br />

shall be a subject panel (hereafter called the panel)<br />

comprising at least two members <strong>of</strong> the academic<br />

staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>.<br />

4.2 The panel shall be appointed by the head <strong>of</strong> the<br />

teaching department not later than the end <strong>of</strong> the<br />

second week <strong>of</strong> the semester in which teaching <strong>of</strong><br />

the subject commences for that particular year.<br />

4.3 The panel shall be reported to the teaching and<br />

awarding faculty boards for noting, in the case <strong>of</strong><br />

subjects commencing in the first semester, no later<br />

than the April meeting <strong>of</strong> the faculty boards and,<br />

in the case <strong>of</strong> subjects commencing in the second<br />

semester, no later than the August meeting <strong>of</strong> the<br />

faculty boards.<br />

4.4 The dean <strong>of</strong> the awarding faculty or head <strong>of</strong> the<br />

awarding department, where such faculty or<br />

department is not also the teaching faculty or<br />

department, may nominate one person to be a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> a panel for courses for which he or she<br />

is responsible.<br />

4.5 The panel shall, subject to these regulations:<br />

4.5.1 After consultation with the head <strong>of</strong> the teaching<br />

department:<br />

4.5.1.1 determine, prior to the issue <strong>of</strong> the first<br />

test or assignment or test for the subject<br />

<strong>of</strong> the year, the form or forms <strong>of</strong><br />

assessment to be used;<br />

4.5.1.2 determine the assessment categories to<br />

be used for the particular year.<br />

4.5.2 Ensure that each panel member and each<br />

person teaching the subject is familiar with the<br />

content and objectives <strong>of</strong> the subject.<br />

4.5.3 Determine the minimum standards which a<br />

student must reach or specific work which a<br />

student must complete in order to be notified<br />

to a faculty board as a passing candidate in the<br />

subject.<br />

4.5.4 Ensure that all students enrolled in the subject<br />

are informed <strong>of</strong> the procedures for assessment<br />

including minimum attendance requirements<br />

and allocation <strong>of</strong> marks for the subject, prior<br />

to the issue <strong>of</strong> the first assignment or test for<br />

the subject for the year.<br />

4.5.5 Be satisfied as to assessment solutions or<br />

statements prepared by or for the convener<br />

under section 4.6.6 prior to the issue <strong>of</strong> the<br />

particular assignment or test.<br />

4.5.6 Determine whether electronic calculators<br />

may be used in an examination or test and,<br />

if so, the lwel <strong>of</strong> sophistication <strong>of</strong> the<br />

calculators which may be used and whether<br />

or not the room supelvisors shall indicate on<br />

a candidate's examination script that a<br />

calculator has been used.<br />

4.6 The convener <strong>of</strong> the subject panel shall, subject to<br />

these regulations:<br />

4.6.1 Ensure that the Registrar is notified, in<br />

writing, <strong>of</strong> the form <strong>of</strong> assessment to be<br />

used for the subject and semester.<br />

4.6.2 Ensure that the Registrar is notified, at least<br />

one week prior to the commencement <strong>of</strong><br />

the examination period for the semester, <strong>of</strong><br />

any subject for which passlnot pass results<br />

only are required.<br />

4.6.3 Ensure that assessment for the subject is<br />

conducted.<br />

4.6.4 Allocate and supervise the drafting <strong>of</strong> examination<br />

papers and assignments as required<br />

by the subject panel.<br />

4.6.5 Ensure that all examination and test papers<br />

for the subject are error-free prior to their<br />

issue to candidates.<br />

4.6.6 Be empowered to require written solutions<br />

to assessable materials, or a statement <strong>of</strong><br />

minimum qualities acceptable for assessment<br />

purposes from the teaching staff responsible<br />

for writing or otherwise determining a part<br />

<strong>of</strong> the assessment.
