5.1 a department or other recognised unit <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>University</strong>, or<br />
5.2 industrial, commercial, governmental, educational<br />
or research organisations approved by the Faculty<br />
Board, or<br />
5.3 a combination <strong>of</strong> 5.1 and 5.2.<br />
In addition, a candidate may be required to undertake<br />
other formal studies as approved by the Faculty Board.<br />
6. Duration<br />
The candidate may undertake the program on a fulltime<br />
or part-time basis. Excluding any periods <strong>of</strong><br />
intermission as set out below, the duration <strong>of</strong><br />
candidature shall be:<br />
6.1 for a candidate whose degree under 4.1.1 or<br />
whose award under 4.1.2 involved less than four<br />
years full-time study (or its part-time equivalent):<br />
not less than twenty-one months and not, under<br />
normal circumstances, more than thirty-six months<br />
<strong>of</strong> full-time study;<br />
6.2 for a candidate whose degree under 4.1.1 or<br />
whose award under 4.1.2 involved not less than<br />
four years full-time study (or its part-time<br />
equivalent): not less than fifteen months and not,<br />
under normal circumstances, more than thirty-six<br />
months <strong>of</strong> full-time study;<br />
6.3 where a student undertakes the masters degree<br />
program (or any portion there<strong>of</strong>), by part-time<br />
study, the maximum time shall normally be not<br />
more than seventy-two months.<br />
After taking advice from the supervisor(s) and the Head<br />
<strong>of</strong> Department, the Faculty Board may grant a period<br />
<strong>of</strong> intermission <strong>of</strong> candidature on such conditions as<br />
the Faculty Board sees fit.<br />
7. Supervision<br />
For each candidate the Faculty Board shall appoint, on<br />
the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> Department, and<br />
on such terms and conditions as the Faculty Board<br />
determines, one or two supervisors, one <strong>of</strong> whom shall<br />
be a member <strong>of</strong> the academic staff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
If the program is carried out within the <strong>University</strong>, at<br />
least one supervisor shall be a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
academic staff <strong>of</strong> the department in which the<br />
program is conducted.<br />
Where two supervisors are appointed one shall be<br />
designated the Co-ordinating Supervisor. The Coordinating<br />
Supervisor must be a member <strong>of</strong> the staff <strong>of</strong><br />
the <strong>University</strong>. The Co-ordinating Supervisor shall have<br />
overall responsibility for the administrative conduct <strong>of</strong><br />
programs. H for any reason a supervisor is unable<br />
effectively to supervise the candidate for a period<br />
exceeding three months, the Faculty Board shall, on the<br />
recommendation <strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> Department, appoint a<br />
replacement supervisor.<br />

supervisor (or Co-ordinating Supervisor) will be required<br />

to interview the candidate. The candidate will be given<br />
access to the report and will have the opportunity to<br />
comment to the Faculty Board on the supervisor's<br />
assessment <strong>of</strong> progress.<br />
Where the Faculty Board is <strong>of</strong> opinion that a<br />
candidate's progress is not, prima facie, <strong>of</strong> a satisfactory<br />
level, a candidate may be required to show cause why<br />
candidature should not be terminated.<br />
Failure on the part <strong>of</strong> the candidate to demonstrate<br />
satisfactory progress may result in the Faculty Board<br />
terminating candidature.<br />
9. Thesis<br />
9.1 Three copies <strong>of</strong> the thesis shall be submitted to the<br />
Registrar. At least two <strong>of</strong> the copies must be bound.<br />
9.2 The thesis must be typed one and a half spaced, in<br />
English on A4 size paper, and conform to any other<br />
specifications prescribed by the Faculty Board.<br />
9.3 One copy <strong>of</strong> the thesis shall, if passed by the<br />
Faculty Board, be lodged in the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Library,<br />
one shall be held by the department in which the<br />
work was done, and one shall be returned to the<br />
candidate.<br />
9.4 With the Faculty Board's prior approval a candidate<br />
may submit work other than in the form set out in<br />
9.2 and 9.3.<br />
10. Examination<br />
The Faculty Board shall appoint on the<br />
recommendation <strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> Department and the<br />
Co-ordinating Supervisor, on such terms and conditions<br />
as the Faculty Board determines, at least two examiners<br />
in respect <strong>of</strong> each candidate's thesis. The candidate's<br />
supervisor shall not normally be appointed as an examiner.<br />
At least one examiner shall be external to the<br />
<strong>University</strong>.<br />
The name <strong>of</strong> the examiners shall not, without the<br />
approval <strong>of</strong> the Faculty Board, be disclosed to the<br />
candidate. Each examiner shall provide a report to the<br />
Faculty Board on the standard <strong>of</strong> the candidate's thesis<br />
and recommend one <strong>of</strong> the following courses <strong>of</strong><br />
action:<br />
(a) that the thesis be passed;<br />
(b) that the thesis be passed subject to the inclusion<br />
<strong>of</strong> minor specified amendments;<br />
(c) that the thesis be returned to the candidate for<br />
major revision and re-submission within a specified<br />
period; or<br />
(d) that the thesis be failed.<br />
Each examiner should indicate whether the report is to<br />
be made available to the candidate in whole or in part.<br />
11. Patents and registered designs<br />
The patent rights or right to register a design for any<br />
device, process, chemical or the like which has been<br />
invented or dewloped by a candidate for the degree <strong>of</strong><br />
Master by research in the course <strong>of</strong> the program being<br />
undertaken for the degree shall, unless otherwise<br />
determined by Council on the advice <strong>of</strong> the Faculty<br />
Board, be the property <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Technology</strong>.<br />
12. Confidentiality<br />
It is the Faculty Board's view that in general the public<br />
should have access to the material contained in a<br />
Masters thesis once the degree has been awarded.<br />
However, the Faculty Board recognises that where a<br />
program <strong>of</strong> research is carried out in or in conjunction<br />
with the type <strong>of</strong> organisation referred to in 5.2 above,<br />
the candidate, in order to pursue such a program, may
