Assessment Regulations<br />
At time <strong>of</strong> printing, the assessment regulations are<br />
under review by the <strong>University</strong>'s Academic Board. A<br />
copy <strong>of</strong> the revised assessment regulations will be<br />
available at re-enrolment in December and at<br />
enrolment in February.<br />
Preamble<br />
The aims <strong>of</strong> these regulations are to safeguard academ~c<br />
standards, to ensure that assessment relates to the objectives<br />
and content <strong>of</strong> the courses taught, to enable students to<br />
have reasonable redress in cases where they may feel that<br />
an injustice has been done, and to ensure the prompt<br />
approval and accurate documentation <strong>of</strong> all results.<br />
The Academic Board believes that a variety <strong>of</strong> forms <strong>of</strong><br />
assessment should be accepted for courses at <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> to enable faculties to select those<br />
they consider most appropriate to each course. No attempt<br />
has been made herein to specify appropriate procedures for<br />
the facilitation <strong>of</strong> learning, the evaluation <strong>of</strong> course content,<br />
or determiping course objectives, methods <strong>of</strong> instruction and<br />
assessment as these matters are the prerogative <strong>of</strong> each<br />
faculty.<br />
1. Definitions and interpretation<br />
Assessment categories<br />
The range <strong>of</strong> results which may be issued for a subject.<br />
Award<br />
Includes the degrees <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy, Master<br />
and Bachelor, and the awards <strong>of</strong> Graduate Certificate,<br />
Graduate Diploma, Diploma and Associate Diploma<br />
awarded by the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Council to persons who<br />
have completed a course <strong>of</strong> study at <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>.<br />
Awarding department<br />
The department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><br />
which has the overall responsibility for a particular<br />
Sw~nburne award and includes a 'faculty' where that<br />
responsibility is taken at the faculty level.<br />
Heac! <strong>of</strong> awarding department<br />
The person responsible for the academic leadership and<br />
administration <strong>of</strong> the awarding department. In the case<br />
<strong>of</strong> an award being within the responsibility <strong>of</strong> a faculty<br />
rather than department it means the dean <strong>of</strong> that<br />
faculty.<br />
Awarding faculty board<br />
The faculty board responsible for making recommendations<br />
to the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Council for the grant <strong>of</strong> a<br />
particular award.<br />
Chief Examiner<br />
The Chief Examiner is the Vice-Chancellor <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong>. Responsibilities <strong>of</strong> Chief Examiner are, for<br />
the time being, delegated to the deans <strong>of</strong> the<br />
awarding faculties.<br />
Course<br />
A set <strong>of</strong> subjects the completion <strong>of</strong> which leads to the<br />
student being eligible for the grant <strong>of</strong> an award by the<br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong> Council.<br />
Convener<br />
The person designated to convene meetings <strong>of</strong> the particular<br />
subject panel established under section four <strong>of</strong><br />
these regulations.<br />
Examination<br />
The formal testing <strong>of</strong> all students enrolled in a subject<br />
during a period specified by the Academic Board for<br />
the purpose <strong>of</strong> examination subject to the control <strong>of</strong><br />
the Registrar through his designated <strong>of</strong>ficer and for<br />
which a result must be produced, published and<br />
recorded on the student's record.<br />
Examinations notice-board<br />
A public notice-board on the <strong>Swinburne</strong> campus designated<br />
by the Registrar for the purpose.<br />
Examinations Officer<br />
The member <strong>of</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> the Registrar's Department who<br />
is responsible for the day-to-day administration <strong>of</strong><br />
examinations.<br />
Facuky board<br />
Includes any properly constituted sub-committee <strong>of</strong> a<br />
faculty board authorised to approve results for a<br />
subject.<br />
Head <strong>of</strong> teaching department<br />
The person who holds the position <strong>of</strong> head or chair <strong>of</strong><br />
the department at <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><br />
which is responsible for the teaching <strong>of</strong> a particular<br />
subject.<br />
Irregularity<br />
An irregularity is the unauthorised use or attempted<br />
use by or for any student <strong>of</strong> any means to gain an<br />
unfair advantage in any examination, test, assignment,<br />
essay or other work, the marks for which form part <strong>of</strong><br />
the final assessment. It includes taking actions contrary<br />
to the instructions for such examination or work; taking<br />
into an examination any material with the intention <strong>of</strong><br />
using it to obtain an advantage.<br />
Student<br />
A person who is enrolled in any subject or subjects<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> whether<br />
formally enrolled for a course or not.<br />
Subject<br />
A course <strong>of</strong> study by whatever name known (including<br />
'unit') within a particular discipline which is recorded in<br />
a register <strong>of</strong> subjects maintained by the Registrar. A<br />
subject has a unique code number and a title and is<br />
recorded in the register as being taught for a number<br />
<strong>of</strong> weeks (duration).<br />
Subject panel<br />
A panel <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> the academic staff <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> established under<br />
section four <strong>of</strong> these regulations.<br />
Student Administration Office<br />
Room AD109 in the Administration Building.<br />
Teaching department<br />
The department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><br />
which has the responsibility for the teaching <strong>of</strong> a particular<br />
subject.<br />
Teaching faculty board<br />
The board <strong>of</strong> the faculty within which the department<br />
responsible for the teaching <strong>of</strong> a particular subject is<br />
located.<br />
2. The objectives <strong>of</strong> assessment<br />
These regulations shall, in any question <strong>of</strong><br />
interpretation, be read subject to the following<br />
