General Faculty lnformation<br />
Enrolment above standard load<br />
Students must not enrol for more than four subjects fulltime<br />
or two subjects part-time without permission from the<br />
Assistant Registrar. These applications are not normally<br />
approved.<br />
Amendments to enrolment<br />
Students must finalise their enrolment by 31 March (first<br />
semester) and 31 August (second semester). Subjects cannot<br />
be added more than two weeks into a semester, and<br />
subjects deleted after the census dates will have a fail result<br />
recorded. An Amendment to Enrolment form must be<br />
completed for all amendments.<br />
Transfer between full-time and<br />
part-time study<br />
Subject to fulfilling any conditions set by the Student<br />
Progress Rwiew Committee, a student can transfer between<br />
full- and part-time study at the December re-enrolment times<br />
without special permission.<br />
Admission to examinations<br />
Enrolment and satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> prescribed<br />
assignment work are usual prerequisites for admission to a<br />
final examination.<br />
Cancellation <strong>of</strong> enrolment<br />
Students wishing to cancel their enrolment are encouraged<br />
to first discuss this action with the Faculty Administrative<br />

0, credit towards a <strong>Swinburne</strong> award<br />
Students wishing to study at another institution for credit<br />
5 towards a <strong>Swinburne</strong> award must complete the application<br />
form available from the Hawthorn Faculty Office (Level 9, BA<br />
Building), Mooroolbark Faculty Office (Room MD10, D<br />
Block).<br />
Noticeboards<br />
lnformation for the benefit <strong>of</strong> all students is displayed on<br />
the noticeboards at the Hawthorn campus on Levels 2 and 9<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Business and Arts Building, and at the Mooroolbark<br />
campus on the windows <strong>of</strong> Room MD10, D Block, and it is<br />
advisable to check these occasionally. General enquiries<br />
should be directed to the Faculty Office at the Hawthorn<br />
campus BA916 and at the Mooroolbark campus MD10, D<br />
Block - please see maps on inside back cover.<br />
Textbooks<br />
Unless otherwise specified in subject outlines, students are<br />
advised not to purchase textbooks or references until classes<br />
commence. Further information will be given during the first<br />
lecture or class.<br />
Cheating and plagarism<br />
Cheating and plagiarism, that is the action or practice <strong>of</strong><br />
taking and using as one's own, the thoughts, writings or<br />
other work <strong>of</strong> someone else with the intent to deceive,<br />
constitutes an irregularity under the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Assessment<br />
Regulations. Such an action is a major infringement <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>University</strong>'s academic values. It is essential that students<br />
understand that plagiarism or cheating shall be considered<br />
to have occurred if:<br />
a computer program substantially written by someone<br />
else (either another student, a previous student or the<br />
author <strong>of</strong> a publication) is presented as the student's<br />
own work;<br />
paragraphs, and even sentences in essays which are<br />
written by someone else are not enclosed in quotation<br />
marks, and accompanied by full reference to source;<br />
r work <strong>of</strong> someone else is paraphrased, and is not<br />
appropriately attributed and referenced.<br />

The industry based learning (IBL) program <strong>of</strong>fers students an<br />
opportunity to combine study with practical on-the-job<br />
experience. Under the program students spend the third<br />
stage <strong>of</strong> their Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business course employed in the<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional, business, government or industry sectors on a<br />
paid full-time work experience program.<br />
The program is optional and only available to full-time students.<br />
At the end <strong>of</strong> the IBL year students resume their<br />
studies at the <strong>University</strong>. To complete the Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />
Business, including IBL, takes a minimum <strong>of</strong> four years.<br />
The program<br />
Students are invited during the second stage <strong>of</strong> full-time<br />
study to apply for entry into the program. Successful<br />
students, who are selected on the basis <strong>of</strong> academic<br />
performance and attitude, are then assisted by the Faculty to<br />
find employment. Assistance is given in the form <strong>of</strong><br />
information sessions with employers, lectures on interview<br />
techniques and skills, and general support in making sure<br />
that each participating student is placed.<br />
IBL students are assigned a member <strong>of</strong> the academic staff to<br />
act as their mentor and to liaise between the employer and<br />
the Faculty.<br />
Students are required to successfully complete a detailed<br />
report on their work experience year.<br />
Whilst working, students are permitted to study one unit per<br />
semester.<br />
Benefits <strong>of</strong> the program to the students<br />
The IBL year is a wonderful opportunity to combine theory<br />
and practice.<br />
IBL gives students one year <strong>of</strong> practical experience, enabling<br />
them to learn about the working environment, to<br />
understand employers' expectations, ethics and relationships<br />
with colleagues.<br />
IBL gives students a head start to a successful future. As<br />
they have already held a job, career decisions are made<br />
easier and IBL students have more to <strong>of</strong>fer to prospectiw<br />
employers.<br />
There is a potential for IBL students to haw a job waiting<br />
on graduation. Alternatively, part-time employment<br />
during final year <strong>of</strong> study may become available with the<br />
employer.<br />
Students have financial freedom through the opportunity<br />
to earn and save money.
