3 Subject aims and description<br />

This subject provides an introduction to pre-modern Korea <strong>of</strong><br />

2 particular relevance to the understanding <strong>of</strong> modern Korean<br />

0, society. The subject deals with the structure <strong>of</strong> politics and<br />

P society <strong>of</strong> the Chosen Period (1392-1910), with particular<br />

2 attention paid to developments in Neo-Confucian thought<br />

during the period. The subject will use English language<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

The objective <strong>of</strong> the subject will be to introduce students to<br />

the Korean language and to give them a secure command<br />

<strong>of</strong> its basic structures. This will entail instruction in langauge<br />

patterns, grammar, reading, writing, aural comprehension<br />

and socio-linguistics. A wide range <strong>of</strong> audio-visual materials<br />

will be used, including language slides, cassette tapes, realia,<br />

and video-cassettes. Audio cassettes <strong>of</strong> the course material<br />

will be available to students for purchase or loan.<br />

Students undertaking a major in Korean are strongly advised<br />

to enrol for AK102 Traditional Korea.<br />

Prerequisites: AK103 and AK104, or equivalent<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

The object will be to extend the students' command <strong>of</strong><br />

modern Korean. This will entail further instruction in<br />

language patterns, grammar, reading, writing, aural<br />

comprehension with increasing emphasis on media Korean<br />

and on socio-linguistics, A wide range <strong>of</strong> audio-visual<br />

materials will be used, including language slides, cassette<br />

tapes, realia, and video-cassettes. Audio cassettes <strong>of</strong> the<br />

course material will be available to students for purchase or<br />

loan. It is highly recommended that students enrolled in this<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Over the past 100 years or so, Korea has passed through<br />

periods <strong>of</strong> social upheaval and foreign encroachment to its<br />

present status as a divided country. Often referred to as<br />

'another Japan', Korea nevertheless retains an ancient and<br />

highly individual civilisation that is under-studied and poorly<br />

understood in the West. This subject deals with aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

Korean society since 1876, including topics such as<br />

intellectual history, the Japanese Colonial experience, religion<br />

in modern Korean society, rural-urban migration, and<br />

women's issues.
