There is a coursework unit examining Pr<strong>of</strong>essional and<br />
Ethical Issues in Counselling Psychology Practice.<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Japanese<br />
The course incorporates advanced language coursework and<br />
research components. The research topic can pertain to any<br />
Japan related area prwided that a suitably qualified<br />
supervisor is available. It is <strong>of</strong>fered as a full-time or a parttime<br />
program.<br />
Entrance requirements<br />
(a) Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree with a major in Japanese with<br />
credit or above results in the third year Japanese<br />
language subjects and overall high performance level in<br />
other disciplines.<br />
(b) Honours (Japanese) with H2A or higher results.<br />
(c) Graduate Diploma in Japanese with credit or above<br />
results in all subjects.<br />
Course structure<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts graduates<br />
Part I:<br />
(a) Six hours per week <strong>of</strong> advanced languages coursework<br />
over two semesters (four semester subjects <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Graduate Diploma in Japanese program).<br />
Alternatively a corresponding period <strong>of</strong> language study<br />
might be undertaken at an approved tertiary institution<br />
in Japan.<br />
(b) The 'Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Inquiry' component <strong>of</strong> the honours<br />
cultural studies seminar.<br />
(c) Thesis: 15,000-20,000 words.<br />
The above program is the same as the Japanese honours<br />
year program.<br />
Part II:<br />
(a) Six hours per week <strong>of</strong> advanced language coursework<br />
over two semesters. (The remaining four subjects <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Graduate Diploma in Japanese.)<br />
(b) Minimum <strong>of</strong> one linguistics subject relevant to the topic<br />
<strong>of</strong> the thesis to be taken on a complementary study<br />
basis at another tertiary institution. (For students<br />
undertaking research in linguistic aspects <strong>of</strong> the<br />
language.)<br />
(c) Minor thesis to be written in English with a substantial<br />
summary in Japanese.<br />
Thesis length: 15,000-20,000 words.<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts (Honours) (Japanese) graduates<br />
(a) Six hours per week advanced language study over two<br />
semesters. Four semester subjects (not taken in the<br />
honours year) <strong>of</strong> the existing Graduate Diploma in<br />
Japanese.<br />
Alternatively a corresponding period <strong>of</strong> language study<br />
might be undertaken at an approved tertiary institution<br />
in Japan.<br />
(b) Minimum <strong>of</strong> one linguistics subject relevant to the topic<br />
<strong>of</strong> the thesis to be taken on a complementary study<br />
basis at another tertiary institution. (For students<br />
undertaking research in linguistic aspects <strong>of</strong> the<br />
language.)<br />
(c) Minor thesis to be written in English with a substantial<br />
summary in Japanese.<br />
Thesis length: 15,000-20,000 words.<br />
Graduate Diploma in Japanese graduates<br />
(a) At least one linguistics subject relevant to the thesis to<br />
be taken on a complementary study basis at another<br />
tertiary institution. (For students undertaking research in<br />
linguistic aspects <strong>of</strong> the language.)<br />
(b) The 'Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Inquiry' component <strong>of</strong> the honours<br />
cultural studies seminar. (Only students with no previous<br />
background in research methodology.)<br />
(c) Further language study to an extent agreed by the<br />
supervisor and the Faculty.<br />
(d) Minor thesis to be written in English with a substantial<br />
summary in Japanese.<br />
Thesis length: 15,000-20,000 words.<br />
Students undertaking the program on a part-time basis may<br />
choose to complete the language component (where<br />
applicable) prior to commencing research or, alternatively,<br />
enrol in one langauge subject and one research component<br />
per semester.<br />
Duration <strong>of</strong> the course<br />
Full-time:<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts entry - two years.<br />
HonourslGraduate Diploma in Japanese entry - one year.<br />
Part-time:<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts entry - no longer than five years.<br />
HonoursIGraduate Diploma in Japanese entry - no longer<br />
than three years.<br />
Assessment<br />
Assessment is continuous and is based on satisfactory<br />
completion <strong>of</strong> both the language coursework and research<br />
components.<br />
