Master <strong>of</strong> Business (Information<br />

<strong>Technology</strong>)<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Business (Information <strong>Technology</strong>) involves<br />

four years part-time study.<br />

Course objective<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> this course is to provide a formal, structured<br />

program, covering the major areas <strong>of</strong> the broad field known<br />

as lnformation <strong>Technology</strong> as applied to business, but with<br />

the flexibility to allow cross-disciplinary studies within the<br />

Swinbume course, i.e. Master <strong>of</strong> Applied Science<br />

(Information <strong>Technology</strong>) and Master <strong>of</strong> Engineering<br />

(Information <strong>Technology</strong>) and, where appropriate, special<br />

electi~s to be undertaken at other associated institutions.<br />

This course is intended for career students who aspire to<br />

management level positions or in management consulting<br />

with s<strong>of</strong>tware houses or management service organisations.<br />

During the course, students will develop:<br />

the high level capacity and independent analytical skills<br />

necessary to assess the impad <strong>of</strong> information technology<br />

on an organisation, the people in it and its implications<br />

for commerce, industry and government;<br />

the capacity to understand the information technology<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> an organisation, and the ability to manage its<br />

selection, introduction and operation within the<br />

organisation;<br />

an understanding <strong>of</strong> the technology <strong>of</strong> information<br />

processing and its application in technical or<br />

management tasks.<br />

In general, graduates will have enhanced skills in developing<br />

and applying advanced information technology systems in a<br />

wide range <strong>of</strong> industrial, commercial and public sector<br />

applications.<br />

Course structure<br />

The Graduate Diploma in Management Systems forms the<br />

first two years <strong>of</strong> the Master <strong>of</strong> Business (Information<br />

<strong>Technology</strong>). Candidates in that course wishing to proceed<br />

to the Master <strong>of</strong> Business (Information <strong>Technology</strong>) should<br />

choose the elective pair:<br />

Admission requirements<br />

Entrance requirements are as specified for the Graduate Diploma<br />

in Management Systems.<br />

For progression from the Graduate Diploma in Management<br />

Systems to the third year <strong>of</strong> the Master <strong>of</strong> Business course,<br />

students would normally be expected to have attained an<br />

average <strong>of</strong> at least credit throughout their Graduate Diploma<br />

in Management Systems studies.<br />

Students with honours degrees in business or computer<br />

science may be granted advanced standing by exemption<br />

from appropriate subjects. Provision is also made for transfer<br />

<strong>of</strong> subject credits to, and from, other cooperating institutions<br />

in Melbourne for approved equivalent course content.<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

(Organisation Behaviour)<br />

This is a four-year part-time degree by coursework and minor<br />

thesis. The fimt two years are the same as for the Graduate<br />

Diploma in Organisation Behaviour; year three comprises a<br />

further four units <strong>of</strong> coursework and the final year is<br />

devoted to the preparation, under supervision, <strong>of</strong> a minor<br />

thesis.<br />

The objectives <strong>of</strong> the Masters degree are:<br />

to extend the learning objectives <strong>of</strong> the graduate diploma<br />

into further domains <strong>of</strong> organisation behwiour and<br />

to develop the capacity <strong>of</strong> participants to conduct<br />

applied research into behavioural issues in organisations.<br />

Entrance requirements<br />

Entty is open to those who have satisfied to an appropriate<br />

standard the requirements <strong>of</strong> the Graduate Diploma in<br />

Organisation Behaviour (or its equivalent).<br />

Admission is determined by a selection committee and<br />

places are limited. The potential for and interest in doing<br />

applied research is an important selection criteria.<br />

Accordingly, each applicant is asked to attach to the<br />

application form a detailed curriculum vitae and a personal<br />

statement.<br />

Thme subjects have a generic structure and the content may<br />

vary from year to year. The general aim is to dwelop mastery<br />

in the research aspects <strong>of</strong> the manager's role that concern<br />

organisation behaviour.<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Business Administration<br />

(MBA)<br />

This is a general management program which meets the<br />

career needs <strong>of</strong> organisational leaders now and towards the<br />

year 2000.<br />

Participants in the program focus, on responsibility and<br />

success in a rapidly changing world, on the need to make<br />

proper use <strong>of</strong> new technologies, on the need to export, and<br />

on the skills <strong>of</strong> people management. In addition they will<br />

develop an integrated knowledge <strong>of</strong> the practical<br />

applications <strong>of</strong> the key business disciplines such as Financial<br />

Management, Economics, lnformation <strong>Technology</strong>, Marketing<br />

and Strategic Planning.<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> this course will be equipped to move rapidly<br />

into positions <strong>of</strong> responsible organisational leadership. They<br />
