The Centre aims to help Australian business and industry in<br />

their decision-making concerning domestic as well as<br />

international business. It <strong>of</strong>fers a range <strong>of</strong> consultancy<br />

services including marketing research, strategic research,<br />

management development and customer focus workshops.<br />

Through its activities the Centre will facilitate the introduction<br />

and implementation <strong>of</strong> cooperative education.<br />

The Centre will continue to present the already wellpatronised<br />

portfolio <strong>of</strong> short courses in marketing, services<br />

marketing and strategic management.<br />

Media and Telecommunications<br />

Centre<br />

The Media and Telecommunications Centre, established in<br />

1988, is based in the media studies subject area in the<br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts. Its role is to initiate educational programs<br />

that will foster closer cooperative connections with industry<br />

and the wider community. The activities it has undertaken<br />

include:<br />

in 1989, the establishment <strong>of</strong> the Commercial Radio Course<br />

to provide training for those planning a career in comrnercia1<br />

radio<br />

in conjunction with media studies course work in the Bachelor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Arts program, the production <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> publications<br />

and publication <strong>of</strong> local communrty newsletters<br />

the presentation <strong>of</strong> short courses on a variety <strong>of</strong> media-related<br />

subjects (such as, media regulation, techniques <strong>of</strong> radio<br />

produdion, media in the classroom, media awareness) and<br />

desktop publishing skills<br />

a publishing program <strong>of</strong> dossierj and monographs on film,<br />

television and general media subjects<br />

research consultancies on telecommunications and media in<br />

the Pacific, Asia and Australia.<br />

National Korean Studies Centre<br />

The National Korean Studies Centre was established with<br />

Commonwealth Government funding in 1990 as a joint<br />

venture <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong>, La Trobe <strong>University</strong>, Monash<br />

<strong>University</strong> and the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Melbourne. The mission <strong>of</strong><br />

the centre is:<br />

to develop and expand teaching, research and associated<br />

activities in Korean Studies, including language, culture,<br />

politics, law, business, education and other relevant<br />

disciplines<br />

to enhance the Australian community's knowledge and<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> Korea<br />

to support Australia's economic and other national<br />

development strategies<br />

Building on existing teaching programs conducted in<br />

consortium member institutions, the Centre:<br />

fosters the design and delivery <strong>of</strong> vocationally and<br />

culturally relevant Korean Studies courses in all sectors <strong>of</strong><br />

the Australian education system<br />

fosters and undertakes high quality comparative regional<br />

research relevant to Korean Studies and to Australia-<br />

Korea relations<br />

promotes greater awareness and mutual awareness <strong>of</strong> all<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> the Australia-Korea business and trade<br />

relationship<br />

promotes greater awareness <strong>of</strong> Australia in Korea.<br />

Centre for Psychological Services<br />

The Centre for Psychological Services provides several major<br />

services to the wider community. These include personal<br />

counselling, psychotherapeutic programs, educational and<br />

training services and research consultancy, all <strong>of</strong> which are<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered on a fee for service basis.<br />

The Centre is staffed by experienced psychologists associated<br />

with the Psychology Department, and enhances the teaching<br />

resources <strong>of</strong> the Department by providing a facility for the<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional training and education <strong>of</strong> graduate students.<br />

Initially the Centre has developed special services in:<br />

marriage and relationship counselling<br />

family therapy<br />

infertility counselling<br />

lifestyle management<br />

treatment <strong>of</strong> anxiety<br />

management <strong>of</strong> children and adolescents.<br />

The Centre accepts referrals from a wide range <strong>of</strong> other pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />

and from both private and government sponsored<br />

agencies.<br />

Science Education Centre<br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> Applied Science<br />

The Science Education Centre operates as part <strong>of</strong> the Faculty<br />

<strong>of</strong> Applied Science to promote interest in science and<br />

technology. The major activities <strong>of</strong> the Science Education<br />

Centre are:<br />

operation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Travelling Science Show - a<br />

science stimulus program which visits primary and<br />

secondary schools throughout Victoria. A separate<br />

program for the wider community and pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

events is also available<br />

provision <strong>of</strong> support for the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Travelling Science<br />

Show to teachers in the form <strong>of</strong> technical information,<br />

seminars and in-service training.<br />

The Taxation Research and Advisory Centre was formed<br />

firstly, in response to the community's need for easy access<br />

to advice on a progressively complex and difficult area and<br />

secondly, the <strong>University</strong>'s growing awareness that its valuable<br />

resources should be made more readily available to the<br />

community.<br />
