Graphic Design<br />
Diploma <strong>of</strong> Art (Graphic Design)<br />
(Hawthorn campus)<br />
The aim <strong>of</strong> the diploma coune is to train designers to work<br />
effectively in areas where information is conveyed by visual<br />
means, such as advertising, publishing, publicity, printing,<br />
merchandising, education and some research projects. The<br />
course is planned to produce imaginative designers, who,<br />
with specialisation and experience in industry, should achieve<br />
positions commensurate with their individual talents.<br />
The first two years <strong>of</strong> the course are common to each <strong>of</strong> the<br />
diplomaldegree streams but in the final diploma year, a<br />
number <strong>of</strong> special bias studies are <strong>of</strong>fered, including<br />
photography, illustration and three-dimensional design.<br />

lndustly Based Learning (IBL)<br />
The aim <strong>of</strong> the degree course is to meet the present and<br />
future needs <strong>of</strong> industry, and to train people with a high<br />
degree <strong>of</strong> creative ability for positions <strong>of</strong> administrative<br />
responsibility in the areas <strong>of</strong> direction and production <strong>of</strong><br />
printing, publishing, computer-based production techniques,<br />
advertising, education and information design.<br />
At the completion'<strong>of</strong> the second year, students are selected<br />
for the degree course. They are required to spend the whole<br />
<strong>of</strong> the third year working in an industrial situation organised<br />
0 by <strong>Swinburne</strong>. This third year enables the student to begin<br />
0 pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice and is supervised by senior staff.<br />
2, During the year in industry, students are required to attend<br />
the <strong>University</strong> for two sessions per week for theoretical<br />
5 subjects: Print <strong>Technology</strong> and Art and Design Culture.<br />
In the final year, in addition to Assigned Projects 4, Design<br />
Management is studied.<br />
Design Centre Degree Program<br />
Diploma students who achieve an overall high standard in<br />
their final year qualify to apply for the Design Centre degree<br />
program which provides an introduction to pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
design practlce in an educational environment.<br />
Students who are selected for this program undertake a<br />
variety <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional consultancy-based design projects<br />
under the guidance <strong>of</strong> lecturing staff and industry mentors.<br />

Course outline<br />
The four-year eight-semester degree coune is divided into<br />
major, related and elective studies covering course work in<br />
eight areas:<br />

These areas are sub-divided into units which are designed to<br />
inter-relate with each other in a grid structure, firstly, giving<br />
lateral support across the semester levels and, secondly,<br />
forming vertical sequences through the eight-semester<br />
course in the respective study areas.<br />

The academic year is divided into two semesters, each <strong>of</strong><br />
fifteen weeks' duration. Units will be taken in the four-year,<br />
