Nikolaus seit dem 16. Jahrhundert. Am Vorabend des 6. Dezembers beschenkt der Heilige Nikolaus (brave) Kinder mit Süßigkeiten, die ihre Stiefel oder Strümpfe vor die Tür oder auf das Fensterbrett gestellt haben. Nikolaus tritt oftmals zusammen mit seinem Gehilfen Knecht Ruprecht auf. Der weißbärtige Weihnachtsmann mit rotem Gewand geht auf den niederländischen „Sinterklaas” zurück. Coca Cola warb mit diesem Bild des hl. Nikolaus schon um die Jahrhundertwende, der in ihrer Werbung in den Firmenfarben auftrat. Der hl. Nikolaus gilt u.a. als Patron der Kinder, alter Menschen, der Feuerwehr, der Pilger und Reisenden, der Gefangenen, der Kaufleute, Bäcker und Wirte, der Schiffer, Matrosen, Fischer, Bauern, für glückliche Heirat und Wiedererlangung gestohlener Gegenstände und gegen Wassergefahren, Seenot und Diebe. Nach einer Bauernregel heißt es: „Regnet es an Nikolaus, wird der Winter streng, ein Graus.
