Anne Rentzsch
(R Sweden, Feb 4)
Digged out by Markus Weidner:
Radio Sweden stops its broadcasts in German as of March 30. This has been
confirmed by Gundula Adolfsson, head of Radio Sweden [I hope the source
gives her position correct, previously she was the head of the German
service]. From April on only three editors will be left to produce web
content. Gundula Adolfsson explains that this decision has been made by
the management of Sveriges Radio because the importance of the internet
for languages like German and English continues to increase while
shortwave suffered a dramatic decline of listeners numbers during the last
years.
Only German covered in the item, so it remains to be seen which languages
(if any besides Swedish) will remain on air and to which extent (or, in
the first place, if still at all) Radio Sweden will use shortwave and 1179
after the current B07 season is over.
(Kai Ludwig-D, dxld Feb 2)
Radio Sweden has confirmed that its German service, which has been on the
air for 69 years, will close at the end of March. Within international
broadcasting, some languages, including German, have had a breakthrough on
the Web and through podcasting, but the number of listeners, especially on
shortwave, has dropped dramatically in recent years.
It is this development which has figured in the decision of Swedish Radio
management to suspend German broadcasts on shortwave and mediumwave. SR
International retains, however, German for a basic service of news on the
Web and as a Monday to Friday podcast.
English is not affected and not in danger of being taken off the air.
CHIUDE LA RADIO SVIZZERA ITALIANA IN ONDE MEDIE?
