PBS services, broadcasting from the area of the quake, continues to be on
6060, 7225 and the new 9740, heard with a relay of CNR-1 from about 1200-
1232 UT. At other times they are mostly all parallel, but on May 19 noted
9740 was not // to anything, so assume they actually had Sichuan PBS-1
programming at 1105. 6200 continues to relay CNR-1 for 24 hours a day. Of
course I hear some stations with their own programming: on 4830, CHBC at
*1200 on May 19 and 4900 // 4040 with the VOS at 1241 on May 19.
Would seem logical that is massive relaying of CNR-1 will continue through
at least the 21th, the last day of national mourning and will probably
continue on even past that date.
History: COSTA RICA - In 1991, an earthquake struck Costa Rica, within a
few miles of the new AWR-Latin America transmission site at Cahuita, on
the coast. No extensive damage was done on the site, which houses three 50
kW txs and two 20 kW txs (former anti-NIC station Radio Impacto, sponsored
by CIA).
AWR Manager David Gregory says they expect to have all the txs on the air
by late summer. Frequencies from Cahuita are 5030 5970 6150 9725 11870
13750, and 15460 kHz. Using log periodic and quad antennas.
1. The existance of that Cahuita transmitter site came to be not exactly
because of the sandinista regime in Nicaragua. Altho that was the main
purpose of Radio Impacto, that Tico-Caribbean property was purchased to
fight Panama's former nearly dictator-drug trafficking regime of Manuel
Antonio Noriega.
Originally there were two 50 kW transmitters, capable of working in tandem
on 980 kHz. with three masts for maximun directivity to Ciudad Colon and
Panama Central region.
2. When Radio Impacto folded wings those facilities went to hands of AWR,
which for local purposes operated as Radio Lira on 1600 kHz, and today
exists only on 88.7 MHz FM. No Costa Rican broadcaster was interested in
