ZIMBABWE According to the latest edition of the American radio magazine,
"Popular Communications", the African country of Zimbabwe has banned the
usage of the popular wind-up radios. Because batteries for portable radio
receivers are almost unobtainable in Zimbabwe, the wind-up radios are used
widely. Those who own a wind-up radio are required to hand them over to
government authorities.

N.B. Quite regardless of the merits of the Russian/Georgian fight over
Abkhazia, and whether anyone recognizes it as "independent", we have long
granted it 'radio-country' status for purely hobby reasons as the more
splintering radio countries, the better. Now, if only SoOssetia also had
some SWBC transmitter.

Actually, ethnic Russians in Latvia and Estonia have as much of a
secessionist sentiment as east Germans do. In other words, none. This is
not to say they don't have their grievances.

Re the digital on 11865.5 - whatever their purpose, they don't appear to
operate to a daily schedule or frequency, but seem to appear randomly
within any SW bc band. Much the same as the recent number station heard by
Wolfy on 9610. Usually they manage to avoid QRMing bc stations, so
apparently know where they can operate in the clear. The mystery - to me -
