(Vlad Titarev-UKR, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews June 16) Radio Ethiopia was the one heard with carrier only on about 9559.95 at tune in 0650, then opening at 0659 with musical IS (as on Dave Kernick's IS site) and clear ID followed by programme in Somali on June 16. The signal was fair at first but weaker when programme started. Nothing audible on 7165 (or 7175 either) today, or since June 11 loggings. (Noel R. Trans World Radio (TWR) is planning to modify the antenna of its 1000 kW transmitter at Roumoules in Southern France to provide a stronger signal in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. More on Roumoules 1467 kHz: Roumoules LW 217, non-dir MW 1467 kHz, directional MW 1467 kHz - 5 different main directions possible, see below. Switching time to other direction within 5 seconds. Correspondence with Dr. Hansjoerg Biener in 2004: Between 1974 and 1987 the RMC/TWR 1466/1467 kHz channel was used only from Col de La Madonne French-near-Monte Carlo soil, from 1987 only at DAYTIME, and from 1987 via Roumoules during NIGHTtime on a directional aerial five mast system for both RMC and TWR purpose. HJB: I don't think that the dates given are correct. The medium wave station of RMC at Roumoules [in France] went on the air in September 1987. This 10 Mio DM project was the first to be entirely financed by Radio Monte Carlo itself. I agree with Wolfgang Bueschel that there were daytime-nighttime shifts of transmitter use. WB: acc to the web site RMC Roumoules-France tx site erected in 1974 as longwave station 218, it was refurbished and re-inforced in 1983, by replacement of the LW transmitters by more powerful Thomcast units, LW 218/216 2000 kW (2x1000 kW), and a 3rd 1000 kW unit in reserve. LW consist two separate antenna systems, a 3-mast installation of 300 metres height each, directional pattern towards Central France, and a single non- direction aerial, 330 metres tall. Switching procedure between the installations last approx. 30 seconds. WB: In 1987 at RMC Roumoules-France MW unit 1467 kHz of 1000 kW power was built up especially for the TWR services towards Europe and the Mediterranean area. The directional antenna construction consist five masts of 100 metres height, produces powerful gain in five privileged directions via ionospheric propagation during night hours. - Targets / towards direction in degrs: GB&IRL at 325 degrs Scandinavia and NoEastEUR at 25 degrs Eastern Europe and CIS states at 85 degrs Spain, Portugal and NoWesternAfrica at 241 degrs Italy, Albania and Greece at 150 degrs. Switching time towards another direction is about in 5 seconds. Dead zone of poor propagation of ground and sky wave mixture is about 100 kilometres around Roumoules. Roumoules: Les Ondes Moyennes.
