Responding to my reception report Karamjit Kaur, Sr Station Administrative
Executive at RSI English Service informed that Radio Singapore
International will cease transmission from end July 2008, they are in the
midst of winding down with last broadcast on 31st July 2008.
(Alokesh Gupta-IND, dxld June 20)
Peter DJ8XW told me yesterday that SBS will cease all SW frequencies and
language services as of July 31, 2008, acc to an e-mail of the former SBS
Hallo Wolfgang,
Re this ..."I got an e-mail from the former technical director of the SBS:
The Kranji shortwave station will be shut down at the end of July 2008.
That's due to a decision by the government of Singapore to close the
station, because of decreased listener numbers and increasing costs. It
concerns all shortwave frequencies and languages. The opposite station of
the BBC will stay."
All of the SBS transmitters (6 X 250kW and 1 X 100kW) are of ABB
manufacture and date from 1992 (or thereabouts), while those of the BBC
are Marconi's (4 X 250KW and 4 X 100KW) dating from 1978, and having been
used previously at Tebrau, plus 4 X 250kW dating from 1987 and moved from
Daventry according to Ludo Maes Transmitter Documentation Project. It's an
interesting situation, and I wonder what will really happen to the SBS
plant?
(Noel R. Green-UK, dxld June 24)
Richard Buckby the retired BBC engineer visited the BBC Kranji site few
years ago, and told about the very old BBC Kranji Marconi tx units there
[non-automatic, manually frequency change procedure ...], which similar tx
type he used in the 60ties in Daventry and Woofferton already .... !
I've been in Tebrau-Malaysia at BBC's Far Eastern site sightseeing in
January 1978 and had a look to these Marconi beasts too.
They should bring the modern Brown Boverie units to the BBC Kranji relay
site in the neighbourhoud instead ... or to the comrades in North Korea
...
