Beste Gruesse, Peter Ippendorf-D
Hello Mr Bueschel, a Happy New Year! Yes, yes, I have spent a few years
both in Montserrat and Antigua on Deutsche Welle and I'm now
(unfortunately) in DL. I have looked at the different URLs. With Flash
Earth DWL Radio Antilles in Montserrat is located on the coordinates
16 40 48 N 62 11 18 W
to find the former DWL location on the satellite pictures, to see all the
both buildings as well as the antenna fields are buried under the ashes.
The administration and studio buildings were located in Plymouth, approx.
as at
16 42 32 N 62 13 15.3 W
and is unlikely to see the former receiving station on St. Georges Hill,
16 43 19.3 N 62 12 25.9 W
DWL bcasting stn Montserrat was via 930 MW kHz and 740 kHz AM; and on SW
with a 50 kW transmitter. The 15 kW transmitter never went into operation,
on initial test the high-voltage transformer fired up and was never
replaced.
When the volcano became active and after aggravation of the situation, the
studios relocated to a residential house in Olveston. At that time there
was the broadcast station still in the south and continued in O'Garros
there until the end came.
Hope this info helps. Best Gruesse, Peter Ippendorf-D
DWL SW ceased as Olle mentioned on June 30, 1989. According to a DW
booklet from 1989 the SW transmissions over the transmitting station
"Dora" in Montserrat were to be terminated on 30 June 1989 at 1400 UTC.
But R Antilles was still on service incl. VoA relay in folowing years, but
WRTH of 1990 and 1991 states not clear though, if the various relays of
BBC, RCI, and DW resumed after heavy Carribean hurricane damage in 1989?
Thanks very much for the research Wolfgang. Here's a little more for the
group.
I didn't find the location Dora, Montserrat on the Internet (but didn't
look that intensively either), but did find this reference to O'Garros
facility/location.
Big Radio Aantilles Threatened
The Caribbean Giant Radio Antilles seems to be treading an uncertain path
as it relates to its survival. The transmitters of Radio Antilles are
located near the extreme South of the Island which can be greatly impacted
by volcanic activity. Reports say moves last week to disassemble
transmitting facilities at O'Garros have caused concern among station
