SINGAPORE 6120 Radio Singapore Int, 1050-1101, noted a male and female
in Malay comments during the period. Everyone seemed happy and jolly
during the period as if they were having a party. Signal wasn't that good
however. Noted a // broadcast on 7235 KHz which faded out before 1100
while 6120 was poor to fair.
6080 Radio Singapore International (pres),1108-1130, Caught a female in
Eng language comments during the period. Signal was always at poor or
worst level. Consequently,it made hearing details difficult. At 1121 music
was presented. Didn't hear the joy in this transmission that was noted in
the 6120 transmission above.
Tuned in at 13:50 to catch the last few minutes of RSI. Time check for
9:55 at 13:55 and into the final news in English. Reception not quite as
good as I've previously heard during the last few weeks, but perfectly
readable. Weak cochannel with music noted at 13:57. // 6150 just audible
under much stronger cochannel. Ended at 13:58:20. End of transmission at
13:58:30 with sign-off (nothing really special, except announcing that the
SW will end as of tomorrow.....a bit disappointing. I was hoping to hear
something more substantial). IS for RA came on at 13:59:40 or so blocking
the last few seconds of RSI. Goodbye to another SW broadcaster :-(
Singapore's regional radio station, Radio Singapore International (RSI),
ceased broadcasts on Thursday, ending its 15-year run.
At a closing ceremony on Thursday, RSI's parent company MediaCorp CEO
Lucas Chow presented momentos to transmitting station staff and together
they bid farewell to an era of shortwave broadcasting in Singapore,
according to local TV Channel NewsAsia.
The regional shortwave radio service was set up in 1994 and broadcasted in
English, Mandarin, Malay and Bahasa Indonesia. It had a listenership base
of half a million listeners around Southeast Asia, including East and West
Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
MediaCorp announced the decision nearly two months ago, saying it was
because the effectiveness of a shortwave radio service had diminished over
time, with changing technology and media consumption habits.
It then said while FM radio broadcast remains strong, audiences are
turning to other channels such as the web and television International
feed for their news.
