Greene described RTE's decision as "illogical" and said a staged report is
required. "Their approach is flawed from the start. There are stages at
which they should approach a digital switch-off and they should do both
the analogue shutdown and digital switch-on in parallel. This would
encourage people to listen to digital and then turn off analogue."
According to Greene, RTE says that less than 10pc of its listeners listen
through medium wave. But the national broadcaster is not taking into
account the emigrant listenership.
He says that while RTE is planning to move to DAB (digital audio
broadcasting), this is now an old standard and the national broadcaster
should be focusing on world digital radio standards like Digital Radio
Mondiale or DAB-plus.
"The French have withdrawn funding for DAB. RTE need to be moving to DAB-
plus rather than an old standard like DAB," Greene argued.
I must add that Tullamore is the dominant station on 567 here only since
the co-channel Rimavska Sobota and Zilina transmitters had been shut down
on January 13. And I suspect that all that will be uncovered with Berlin,
perhaps I'm wrong and some interesting catches will be possible?
Incidentally, the two RTE MW transmitters - Tullamore 567 kHz and Cork 729
kHz - are actually still on the air and putting out a continuous
annoucement about retuning to FM. I'm not sure how long this will continue
before they are switched off for good, perhaps no more than a few days, so
there's still a last chance to log these transmitters.
ISRAEL With highly appropriate Purim timing, the Israel Broadcasting
Authority has saved the Jews of Persia ... as an audience.
Four million shekels have been allocated in the IBA's budget to spare
Israel Radio's budget-threatened shortwave Farsi broadcasts, which are
widely listened to in Iran, and are regarded as a crucial bridge to the
Jewish community there.
But the radio respite has not been extended to the IBA's other foreign
