it's more or less the 8 kW Telefunken from Reichenbach, dismantled there
for reuse at Golm (afterwards Reichenbach continued for some time only
with a 100 watts rig, set up on a desk). Operations were often difficult,
lack of spare parts was a big problem, one day a staff member took the
suburban train to West Berlin and brought a last delivery of PA stage
tubes in a backpack before game was over with this source. One cat had
been killed by reaching the plate current (7 kV), knocking the transmitter
off air, another cat had better luck and survived such an incident.
The transmitter never suffered damage from lightning although it had in
thunderstorms been kept on air until the last moment, counting the seconds
between flash and thunder. After the last transmission the demolition of
the site had been ordered in 1993 and was completed by 1994. At least I
had a last chance to see it when travelling from Nauen to Potsdam, and a
stretch of line (with the Bredow station, named after German radio pioneer
Hans Bredow) used by this train no longer exists now as well.
AFN Wuerzburg IS GONE.
AFN Wuerzburg, which not long ago changed its name to AFN Franconia, has
apparently closed down without any ceremony. Their webpages have been
replaced by an announcement "The AFN Franconia audience is now being
served by AFN Bavaria. Please visit

for more details!", as can be seen at

AFN Bavaria for its part has not updated its frequency information page so
far but already added links to the websites of the Ansbach, Bamberg and
Schweinfurt garrisons previously served by AFN Franconia. Note also the
webcast of their TV news.

I have not seen reports about the current use of the former AFN Franconia
radio frequencies so far. It remains to be seen for how long the Wuerzburg
transmitters (1143 and 104.9) will stay on the air (in fact I have so far
not seen a confirmation that they are still on air at all), since only a
few US facilities are left there and will be closed down soon, as far as I
know.
Apparently the TV operations of AFN Franconia ceased already earlier, here
is a discussion of the Bamberg ch. 39 (European channel with video on
615.25, same as American ch. 38) being noted on November 13 to carry AFN
Bavaria now while 1143 still had Wuerzburg programming:

Herein they discuss that this must be a mistake, wrong feed patched in,
because there were no crawls, no nothing. But obviously the plug had been
intentionally pulled and patched into the Vilseck feed.
GREECE 6230 Era Sport 105.8 MHz spur or mid-product, with ID and sports
Mixing product, 15650 minus 9420 = 6230 kHz, analogous to 6210 previously
heard which is 15630 minus 9420 kHz. So 6230 is possible whenever both
higher frequencies are on the air from Avlis. I wonder if you are close
enough to be getting this by groundwave?
