Bibliographical Essay<br />

Orig<strong>in</strong>al Sources<br />

Unlike <strong>the</strong> case with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r German services, virtually all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Luftwaffe’s<br />

records were destroyed at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> World War 11. There are some materials available,<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y are heavily weighted toward <strong>the</strong> supply and production side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Luftwaffe, and few records rema<strong>in</strong> that deal with operational units. Those few records<br />

that survived <strong>the</strong> war were captured by <strong>the</strong> victorious Anglo-American allies<br />

and have been returned to <strong>the</strong> Germans. They are now at <strong>the</strong> military archive at<br />

Freiburg <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Federal Republic <strong>of</strong> Germany. Micr<strong>of</strong>ilms <strong>of</strong> a portion <strong>of</strong> those records<br />

are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Archives <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton and at <strong>the</strong> Imperial War Museum <strong>in</strong><br />

London. In addition, <strong>the</strong> records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> team that worked on Luftwaffe histories for<br />

<strong>the</strong> United States <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> <strong>in</strong> Karlsruhe <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1950s are available at both <strong>the</strong> Militar/Archiv<br />

<strong>in</strong> Freiburg, Federal Republic <strong>of</strong> Germany and <strong>the</strong> USAF Historical<br />

Research Center at Maxwell <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> Base, Alabama.<br />
