under actual combat conditions. These so-called volunteers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> famous<br />

Kondor Legion engaged <strong>in</strong> all types <strong>of</strong> air operations dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> two-year<br />

<strong>in</strong>volvement. Bombardment <strong>of</strong> coastal ports and <strong>in</strong>terior cities from Madrid<br />

to Guernica, <strong>in</strong>terdiction <strong>of</strong> supply routes, air superiority dogfights, as well<br />

as traditional ground support missions, gave Luftwaffe volunteer aviators<br />

<strong>in</strong>valuable lessons with which to improve <strong>the</strong>ir air arm. Infamous <strong>in</strong>stances<br />

<strong>of</strong> bomb<strong>in</strong>g effectiveness like Guernica, which killed or maimed 2,000<br />

defenseless civilians <strong>in</strong> 3 hours, provided Hitler and his propaganda m<strong>in</strong>istry<br />

<strong>the</strong> tools with which to <strong>in</strong>timidate governments elsewhere <strong>in</strong> Europe.<br />

However, some lessons that emerged from <strong>the</strong> Spanish Civil War altered<br />

<strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> German air superiority th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and weapon development,<br />

with great portents for <strong>the</strong> future.64<br />

Kondor Legion veterans such as Lt. Col. Wolfram von Richth<strong>of</strong>en, a<br />

cous<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> World War ace and <strong>the</strong> last commander <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> German cont<strong>in</strong>gents<br />

<strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>, returned home with new ideas about employment <strong>of</strong> air<br />

power. His experiences conv<strong>in</strong>ced him that aviation was more than a mere<br />

substitute for artillery when properly applied to <strong>the</strong> land battle. He conv<strong>in</strong>ced<br />

Luftwaffe <strong>of</strong>ficials that organization <strong>of</strong> close-support formations <strong>of</strong><br />

bombers and fighters work<strong>in</strong>g with armored columns could effect a breakthrough<br />

on <strong>the</strong> ground. By <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong> Spanish <strong>in</strong>volvement ended <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 1939, both veterans amd home <strong>of</strong>ficials emphasized <strong>the</strong> Luftwaffe’s<br />

role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air-land battle ra<strong>the</strong>r than strategic bomb<strong>in</strong>g operations.<br />

But, w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g a quick land victory first required ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> air space.<br />
